Lady Yellowjackets Win Opener In Arizona March 6, 2008 Alvin defeated Deer Valley, Arizona 5-1 in its opening game at The Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Arizona on Thursday and will face Clovis, New Mexico tonight (Thursday, March 6) at 8 p.m. Texas time. Tiffany Denham earned the complete-game victory allowing one run and five hits over seven innings while striking out eight. Deer Valley's lone run was a result of a bad-hop single. The Lady Yellowjackets' four-run fourth inning featured Jessica Savage's two-run double, and RBI singles from Meagan Potts and Alexis Joseph. Vanessa Eng, Meghan Gomez, Potts and Joseph scored runs. Alvin took a 1-0 lead in the third frame when Savage singled, stole second and scored on Kelsey Nichols' RBI double. Third baseman Natalie Farias made several key plays and had six assists for Alvin. A victory tonight puts Alvin into Friday's 2:30 p.m. Texas time winners bracket game. Check out more tournament photos in the softball photo gallery. Alvin Edged In Semifinals; Will Go For Third Place March 8, 2008 Poly-Riverside, Calif. slipped by Alvin 4-3 in the championship semifinals of the Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Arizona on Saturday (3-8-08). The Lady Yellowjackets (16-3) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Kelsey Nichols' two-run shot, her third home run of the tournament and fourth on the season, and a RBI single by Natalie Farias. Poly-Riverside tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the opening frame, and the score stayed 3-3 until the fifth when Poly-Riverside scored once on two hits. Alvin catcher Meghan Gomez saved at least three runs with blocks behind the plate and also had a single in the semifinals. Leadoff hitter Alexis Joseph added two singles, while Jessica Savage, Kelsie Kettler, Vanessa Eng and Megan Knippa had one hit apiece. Senior pitcher Tiffany Denham went the distance in another gutsy performance. Alvin Outlasts Pacifica In Nine For Third Place March 8, 2008 It took a couple of extra innings, but Alvin held on to defeat Pacifica, Calif. 8-7 in nine innings for third place at the Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Arizona on Saturday (3-8-08). Vanessa Eng's RBI double in the ninth scored Jessica Savage for the victory that gives Alvin a 17-3 season record and a 5-1 finish at the 40-team, out-of-state event. Tiffany Denham went the entire nine innings for the pitching victory while posting five strikeouts. "I'm very pleased," Alvin coach Carla Newsom said. "We came here and did what we wanted to do, and that was gain confidence facing some very good teams. We played well as a team and had a number of players step up throughout the tournament." Savage, Megan Knippa and Kelsi Kettler had multiple-hit games against Pacifica, and Kettler belted her second home run of the tournament. |
