Nimitz's Harris slams way to honors
A look at top performers at Houston-area high schools:
Girls athlete of the weekName: Rachelle Harris, senior, Nimitz.Notable: The Nimitz senior went 2-for-3 with a walk in a 13-10 win over Memorial on Friday night. With the win, Nimitz improved to 6-0 in District 19-5A. One of Harris' hits Friday was a grand slam over the center-field fence. Quotable: "The pitch was right down the middle and I got a great piece of it. I didn't know it had gone over until I got to first and my coach was cheering." — Rachelle Harris
Other nomineesLauren Arnold, Cypress Creek — The forward had two goals in a 6-1 win over Cypress Falls on Tuesday night.Jaclyn Bectle, Pearland — On Friday, the sophomore went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs in an 8-0 win over Clear Creek. She also had an unassisted double play at shortstop. Beth Evans, Clear Lake — The senior pitcher led the Falcons to two wins this past week when she threw a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts against Alvin on Tuesday and a perfect game in a 2-0 win over Ball on Friday. Jessica Flax, Pearland — At the Clear Creek Invitational, the senior won three individual gold medals. She took the 100-meter hurdles (13.95 seconds), the 300-meter hurdles (45.22) and the high jump (5-4). Megan Munoz, Kingwood — The senior won two running events at the Spring Branch ISD Relays — the 1,600-meter run (5:17.88) and the 3,200 (11:37.91). |
