Lady Tiger softballers take 3rd in tournament

MARBLE FALLS - Wharton's softball team beat Odessa Permian 3-2 Saturday afternoon to take the third place trophy in the Marble Falls Barbecue Classic this past weekend.

Wharton went 2-1 in pool games on Friday.

The Lady Tigers beat Lakeview 3-2, lost to Friendswood 5-3 and beat Waco Hirschi.

In bracket play on Saturday, Wharton beat Junction 7-1 and lost to Texas City 3-2 before beating Odessa Permian.

Vs. Junction - 7-1

Christie Viktorin: 2 for 3, scores 3 runs, stole 2 bases, with a triple; Paige Mata: 2 for 2 with a double and a triple, 3 RBI; Heather Reynolds: 1 for 2 with an out of the park home run, 2 RBI; Brittany Gutierrez: 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI; Jael Ramirez pitched 4 innings, had 5 K; and gave up 3 hits.

Vs. Texas City - 2-3

Christie Viktorin: 1 for 2, scoring a run; Paige Mata: 1 for 1 with 2 RBI; Brittany Gutierrez: 1 for 2; Meagan Drenner: walked and scored the other run; Jael Ramirez: pitched 3 innings, had 4 K; 2 walks, 4 hits.

3rd place: Odessa Permian - 10-4

Christie Viktorin: 2 for 3 with a double, scoring 3 times, 1 RBI; Paige Mata: 1 for 2 with a double and scored 2 times; Heather Reynolds: 3 for 3 with two doubles and 4 RBI, scored twice; Brittany Gutierrez: 2 for 2 with a double and a stolen base; Amber Rodriguez: 1 for 2 with a double; Mardi Gutierrez: 1 for 2; Jael Ramirez: 4 innings; 3 K; 4 walks; 3 hits; 4 runs; 0 earned runs.

Judith Sanchez, Cierra Coleman, Sharneace Johnson and Mel'isa Phynon were standouts as courtesy runners.

Wharton played at Bellville Tuesday and will visit Class 2A Danbury Friday.
