| Pool Game 1.
Texas Smash (visitors) vs. Texas Aces (home). Lost 3-0. Pitchers Rhiannon/Lauren.
The team looked a little rusty in the 1st inning, but they hadn't played a game since mid-August state tournament, and only had two full practices since starting back up in late September. Rhiannon pitched the first two innings. A lead-off walk followed by an RBI double gave the opposing team an early lead. Then Rhiannon settled down and struck out the next batter looking. The next batter grounded out to the pitcher, but brought in another RBI. The last batter also struck out looking. The next inning Rhiannon struck out three, with only one runner reaching base on an error. Lauren pitched the next one and two/thirds innings, allowing only one hit, with one walk. An error in the 4th allowed one unearned run to score. Although the Aces allowed only two hits, they couldn't come up with any hits themselves. They had an accumulated six strikeouts and three ground-outs in three innings batting. |

| Pool Game 2.
Texas Aces (visitors) vs. Texas Heat (home). Tied 1-1. Pitcher Kimberly
vs. Kayla Wilson.
Laura started off with a base hit and advanced to second on a passed ball. After the next batter struck out, Amy bunted and made it safely to 1st base and advanced Laura to 3rd, but Laura was then tagged out trying to come home. Amy stole second successfully, but was caught trying to steal third. Kimberly pitched two quick strikeouts and one ground-out to end the first inning. The second inning, Lauren grounded out, but Brytish, Portia, and Kelsea all walked after full counts. After a strikeout, Jenna (batting with a cast on her wrist) hit an RBI single that allowed Brytish to score. Portia also tried to score, but was tagged out at the plate. In the bottom of the second, an overthrow from short allowed a runner to reach first base, but Jenna backed up the throw and caught the runner off the bag for the out. Kimberly walked two after the second batter grounded out, but Brytish caught a fly ball to center field for the third out. The Aces didn't get any more hits in the next inning and 1/3. In the bottom of the 3rd, Kimberly walked the lead-off batter, but got two quick outs with a ground-out and a strikeout. Although Jenna had made a great throw from third to first for the ground-out, she had trouble picking up the ball on the next grounder (because of the cast), and the batter reached first and the unearned run scored. The next batter got a base hit, but was called out for not committing to run to second after the pitcher had the ball. |

1. Texas Heat (visitor) vs. Texas Aces (home). Won 1-3. Pitcher Rhiannon
vs. Kayla Wilson.
First two innings were scoreless, with each pitcher allowing only one hit. In the 3rd, the Heat lead-off batter got a base hit. The second batter grounded out, but advanced the runner to second. The next batter got another base hit, advancing the runner to third. A sacrifice bunt scored the runner from third, but the Aces turned a double play and tagged out the other base runner trying to reach third. Kimberly led off the bottom of the third with a solid triple to center field, followed by a walk for Lauren. Amy made a sacrifice bunt to score Kimberly and advance Lauren to third. Jenna grounded out to right field but drove in Lauren. Brytish followed with a base hit, and Caitlin brought her home with a triple to left field. Three quick outs in the top of the 4th ended the game. The Aces allowed only 3 hits in the game, with no walks and 2 strikeouts in 4 innings in the field. |

2. Sugar Land Outlaws (visitors) vs. Texas Aces (home). Won 0-1. Pitcher
Kimberly.
The Aces allowed only one hit in the 1st with three ground-outs. Portia led off the Aces batting with a single, but Jenna grounded out to first, and Portia was tagged out trying to reach third. Brytish hit a single, but was left stranded after stealing to third. In the next two innings, the Aces allowed one base hit, with one walk and four stikeouts. The Aces couldn't come up with any hits in the 2nd, but a bunt by Lauren got her on first base with one out in the 3rd inning. Portia advanced Lauren with a sacrifice bunt, and Lauren stole around to 3rd. Jenna (playing with a cast on her broken wrist) hit a swinging bunt up the first base line. Lauren headed for home. The catcher ran in to get the ball, but Lauren managed to slide under the tag and the run scored. Jenna was particularly happy to get the RBI since this was her old team. In the 5th inning, after walking two batters with only one out, Kimberly struck out the next batter. The base runners had advanced to 2nd & 3rd on steals. The next batter up hit a hard ground ball to short. As the shortstop was trying to field the ball, the base runner from second ran into the path of the ball and was hit by the ball! Runner out, game over, we won! |

3. Texas Smash (visitor) vs. Texas Aces (home). Lost 1-0. Pitcher Rhiannon
(no hitter).
An error in 1st inning by Aces defense allowed a runner on base, while a second error allowed the runner to score. Brytish had a base hit in the 1st, but was left stranded. In the second, Rhiannon walked a batter with one out. The next batter hit a pop-up, and Lauren at 2nd made an incredible catch, landing on the ground near 1st base. Lauren crawled toward 1st, but Kimberly on 1st base quickly snatched the ball out of her glove to make the double play as the base runner tried to return to 1st. Rhiannon walked the lead-off batter in the 3rd. Portia caught a fly ball in left field for the first out, and Lauren caught a hard hit line drive at 2nd for another out. Rhiannon walked another batter, but Jenna fielded a grounder to right field and made the throw to first for the third out. Rhiannon had two strikeouts and one walk in the next two innings. The Aces defense didn't allow any hits over five innings, but they couldn't come up with any more hits themselves. They had one hit, nine strikeouts, and five ground-outs in five innings batting. |

4. Texas Heat (visitor) vs. Texas Aces (home). Lost 5-0. Pitcher Kimberly
vs. Kayla Wilson.
Kimberly walked the lead-off batter on a full count, and the next batter hit a single. The next batter brought in a run on a single. The Aces tried to turn two on a hit to 2nd, but Brytish was off the bag as she turned to make the throw to first. (It sure looked pretty, though). Another run scored. The runners advanced on a ground-out, and a sacrifice bunt allowed the unearned run to score. The Aces couldn't come up with any hits in the 1st, although Brytish had a beautiful line drive that the Heat shortstop managed to jump up and snag. After a lead-off single by the Heat in the 2nd, and two stolen bases as the next batter walked, a sacrifice fly scored another run. Then a single up the middle scored another run. The Heat scored 3 runs in the 1st inning then 2 in the 2nd before the Aces defense tightened up, allowing no more hits in the game. Unfortunately, the Aces bats weren't there for this game. The only Aces hit came in the last inning when Caitlin hit a beautiful double out to right center field. However, the field umpire called it a "no-pitch" because there was a ball on the field in far right field. He was the only one that noticed it, and did not notify the plate umpire until after the play was over. Caitlin was robbed of her double! Back at the plate, Caitlin hit a hard grounder down the third base line for a triple! With time running out and two outs, once Kelsea had two strikes on her, Coach Kim instructed her to intentionally strike out to start a new inning. However, the field umpire then called the game. He decided time had already expired, but didn't tell anyone until after the inning was over. What a sad way to end a tournament! |
