Texas AFA State Tournament
Beaumont Athletic Complex, Beaumont, TX
July 14-16, 2000
Double Elimination/10 Teams

The Texas Aces made a very disappointing showing at the AFA state tournament. A bad start in the first inning of the first game allowed the Outlaws to take the lead, and although the Aces shut them down after that, the Aces couldn't overtake the lead.  Then, the Aces set a new record for errors in a game as they lost to the Beaumont Blast 4-1, even though they had 4 hits and allowed the Blast only 2.

Bracket Game 1. Texas Aces (visitors) vs. Sugar Land Outlaws (home). Lost 1-4. Pitchers Kayla/Rhiannon.
The Aces started off causing the Outlaws to make 2 errors in the 1st inning, which allowed the Aces 2 baserunners.  One base hit by Portia brought home the first run for the Aces.  Kayla struggled in the first, walking the first batter, then struck out the next.  A hit up the middle advanced the first runner, and another hit past Brytish at short brought home a run for the Outlaws.  Another hit past short loaded the bases.  A missed ball at third allowed two runs to score.  Another walk loaded the bases again.  Rhiannon came in to pitch for the Aces.  On a fielder's choice back to the pitcher, a bad throw to the catcher allowed another run to score before Rhiannon stuck out the next two batters.

In the top of the 2nd, Kendall started out with a walk, and advanced on a ground-out.  Lauren then walked, and a safe bunt by Amy scored Kendall.  A ground-out by Brytish scored Lauren.  Rhiannon and the Aces defense got the Outlaws 3-up 3-down with ground-outs to pitcher, third, and short.  In the top of the 3rd, Jenna led off with a walk and advanced to 2nd on a ground-out.  Rhiannon followed with a base hit to advance Jenna to 3rd.  Kendall hit a ground ball to 3rd base, and the Outlaws caught Jenna trying to go home.  After Kelsea walked to load the bases, a strike-out left all runners stranded.  The Outlaws only had one baserunner in the 3rd on an Aces defensive error.  In the top of the 4th, two fly-outs and a groundout left the Aces trailing by 1 run.  The Outlaws had one out, and one on base on an Aces error when time expired.

Bracket Game 2. Texas Aces (visitors)  vs. Groves Rip-It (home). Won 9-0. Pitcher Kimberly.
Kimberly and the Aces defense held the Rip-It to a no-hitter in the 2nd game.  The Rip-It had only one baserunner on a defensive error that was really a bad call at first by the umpires.  Amy led off the Aces batting with a fair bunt, followed by another fair bunt by Kendall.  Portia hit a fly ball over 1st base, but the 2nd baseman made a great catch for the out.   Jenna walked to load the bases.  Kesha hit into a fielder's choice for an RBI, Kelsea hit a single to load the bases again, and Kimberly hit a single to bring in two runs.  Brytish got to first on an error as Kelsea scored, and Lauren bunted to bring home Kimberly.  Amy walked to load the bases, but a pop-up to pitcher left bases loaded.  In the 2nd, Portia and Jenna walked, and Kesha and Kelsea followed with RBI singles.  Amy reached on error in the 3rd, and scored on a single by Portia.  Jenna and Tiffany walked, but the Aces left the bases loaded.

Bracket Game 3. Texas Aces (visitor) vs. Beaumont Blast (home). Lost 1-4. Pitchers Kayla/Rhiannon.
In the top of the first, Amy led off with a walk, Kendall reached on error, and Kayla hit a single, but the Aces left the bases loaded.  The Blast first batter reached on error on a ball missed at 2nd, and advanced on another error.  A sac bunt brought home the Blast first run, and two ground-outs to 2nd ended the 1st.  Kimberly and Amy both walked after 2 outs in the 2nd, followed an RBI single by Kendall.  Portia walked to load the bases, but a caught pop-foul left the the bases loaded again.  The Blast 1st batter in the 2nd reached on another missed ball at 2nd, followed by a base hit.  An error at short allowed another runner on base to load the bases.  Another missed ball at 2nd allowed one run to score, and an error when the outfielder held the ball allowed yet another run to score.  With runners on 2nd and 3rd, the next batter hit to Jenna at 3rd, who faked the throw to first and caught the runner leaving third.  The Aces didn't have any baserunners in the 3rd, with a pop-fould and a pop-up to 3rd and a groundout.

Rhiannon came in to pitch in the bottom of the third.  After a base hit past short, Rhiannon got the force out at 2nd when the next batter hit back to the pitcher.  After the out was made and the shortstop threw the ball back to the pitcher, the runner on 1st tried to advance to 2nd then hesitated and returned to 1st.  The field umpire immediately made the call that the runner was out.  However, the pitcher threw to 1st, and the 1st baseman missed the ball, but it shouldn't have mattered, because the umpire already had called the runner out.  Then the Blast coach questioned the call, and the umpires stopped the clock and discussed the play at length.  They even called in some tournament official to discuss the matter.  After a good 10 minutes of discussion, they decided to put the runner back on 1st.  When the Aces coach tried to find out why they made that decision, the umpires refused to comment and said we were back on the clock.  (Although the bad decision and rudeness by the officials did not cost the Aces the game, it was highly questionable that they allowed the home town Blast 10 minutes to discuss the play, and wouldn't give the visiting team one minute to get clarification.  The tournament official also refused to talk to the Aces after the game was over.)  Another error at 2nd allowed the runner to score, and another error error at 1st allowed another baserunner before Rhiannon got the final strikeout.  Another inning was started, and Brytish led off with a walk, followed by a base hit by Rhiannon and a safe bunt by Amy.  However, s strikeout, a line-drive out, and a ground-out left the bases loaded for the 3rd time in the game.
