Double Elimination/13 Teams
Final Tournament Bracket

Through the "Luck of the Draw", which turned out to be unlucky for all the teams we knew in the tournament, the Texas Aces were paired up against the Texas Smash in the first game, while the Sugar Land Outlaws were paired against the Beaumont Blast in the same half of the bracket.  This meant that only two of these teams could finish in the top 4 places.  The Texas Aces lost to the Texas Smash in the first game, and had to work their way up through the loser's bracket to meet the Smash again in the championship game, knocking out the Outlaws and the Blast along the way.  Although heavy rains on Saturday afternoon pushed more games to Sunday, the rain held off enough to complete the tournament with cloudy skies on Sunday.

Final Tournament Results:  Second place, team trophy and individual plaques.

Bracket Game 1. Texas Smash (visitors) vs. Texas Aces (home). Lost 0-3. Pitcher Rhiannon.
Rhiannon pitched the full 7 innings, and allowed only 3 hits with 3 strikeouts and no walks.  All the runs were unearned as a result of Aces fielding errors.  The Smash got two hits in the 5th and one in the 6th, but the runners were not allowed to score.  The Aces made some outstanding defensive plays.  Rhiannon caught a hard hit line drive back to the pitcher and Brytish caught a line drive at short.  Kelsea threw to Brytish to catch a runner stealing 2nd, and Kendall made a double play on a line drive to 1st.  On offense, however, the Aces couldn't catch up to the Smash pitcher, and had their only baserunner when Brytish walked in the 1st inning.  Angela pitched a near-perfect game for the Smash, allowing no hits with 11 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Bracket Game 2. East Texas Firebirds (visitors) vs. Texas Aces (home). Won 12-2. Pitcher Kimberly.
Kimberly pitched four innings against the Firebirds, and allowed only 1 hit with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts.  The hit came in the 4th (with the Aces leading 11-0) and brought in the Firebirds first runner who reached on an Aces fielding error.  That runner then scored on a groundout.

Brytish led off the Aces scoring with a homerun in the 1st, followed by a double by Kendall and a single by Jenna.  Kesha grounded out to bring home a run.  In the bottom of the 2nd, the Aces batted around their lineup as Amy and Kayla both walked, Kimberly hit an RBI single, Portia grounded out to bring home Kayla and Kimberly. Brytish hit a safe bunt, and Kendall walked.  Jenna then hit a single to bring home Brytish and Kendall.  Kelsea hit a safe bunt to advance Jenna, and Amy followed with another safe bunt to advance both runners, but Jenna got caught trying to go home for the 3rd out.  In the bottom of the 3rd, the Aces went through their lineup again as Lauren led off with a solid single over 2nd base.  After 2 outs, Brytish walked.  Rhiannon brought home 2 runs with a single that got past short.  Jenna followed with a single, and Kesha took a pitch to the face to load the bases.  Kelsea then followed with a single to bring home two more runs before the final out.  What a rally on two!  Kayla led off the bottom of the 4th with a double, and scored on a single by Kimberly.  Brytish walked again, but time expired with two runners on base and only one out.

Bracket Game 3. Texas Aces (visitors) vs. Sugar Land Outlaws (home). Won 3-0. Pitcher Kayla.
Rain postponed the Aces next bracket game that was originally scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.  The rain started around 3:00 p.m., and the remaining games scheduled for Saturday had to be rescheduled for Sunday morning.  The Aces were ready to play the Outlaws, since they had lost to them the previous two meetings.

Portia led off the Aces offense with a safe bunt, and advanced on a safe bunt by Brytish.  Jenna grounded out to bring home Portia, and the Aces were on the board.  Kayla pitched for the Aces, and started off with a strikeout.  The next batter grounded out to Brytish at short.  The Outlaws got one single up the middle in the 1st, but the runner was left stranded when Kayla got the third out on another strikeout.  Kelsea led off the 2nd with a single, and advanced on a stolen base followed by a sacrifice bunt by Amy.  Kayla hit a safe bunt to score Kelsea.  Lauren advanced Kayla with another sac bunt, followed by a single by Portia, but two runners were left stranded.  The Aces got the Outlaws 3-up 3-down in the bottom of the 2nd, with one groundout to short and two strikeouts "looking".  In the 3rd, Jenna was the Aces only baserunner after she tripled out to left center, but was left stranded.  The Outlaws were 3-up 3-down again in the 3rd with a swinging strikeout, a strikeout looking, and a groundout to 1st played by Kendall.

Amy led off the 4th with a single, but was forced out on a hit by Kayla.  Lauren hit a double out to right field to drive home Kayla for the Aces 3rd run of the game.  In the bottom of the 4th, the Outlaws had one baserunner on a walk, but two groundouts and a strikeout left the runner stranded.  Kimberly and Jenna both walked in the 5th, and advanced on a sac bunt by Rhiannon.  Kelsea hit a bunt and reached first as the Outlaws held the runner at 3rd.  Amy hit a flyball to left field that was caught, and the bases were left loaded on a groundout.  The Outlaws got their second hit of the game in the bottom of the 5th when Nicole led off with a double to left field, but after advancing to 3rd on a groundout, she was tagged out when Kayla decided to get the runner at home instead of 1st and keep the shutout going!  Kayla ended the game with another strikeout looking, for her eight strikeout of the game.  Good job, Kayla!

Bracket Game 4. Beaumont Blast (visitors)  vs. Texas Aces (home). Won 4-0. Pitcher Rhiannon.
Rhiannon pitched a near-perfect game against the Beaumont Blast with the help of the Aces defense.  She ended up with 5 strikeouts, no walks, no hits, and one batter hit by a pitch.

The Aces defense got the Blast 3-up 3-down in the first inning with groundouts to Lauren at 2nd, Rhiannon at pitcher, and Brytish at short.  The Aces were also 3-up 3-down with a pop-up to 1st, a groundout, and a fly ball to center field by Jenna.  In the top of the 2nd, Rhiannon hit the first batter with an inside pitch.  After a flyball out to short, Lauren tagged the runner out on a force as she tried to go to 2nd.  Rhiannon got the 3rd out with a strikeout.  In the bottom of the 2nd, the Aces started out with a groundout, then Amy walked.  Kayla hit a double to drive in the Aces first run.  Lauren and Brytish both walked to load the bases.  The Blast kept the Aces from scoring by taking the force at home on a hit to the 2nd baseman, but a single up the middle by Portia then scored 2 more runs to put the Aces up by 3.  A flyball to center by Kendall ended the inning.

The Blast were once again 3-up 3-down in the 3rd, with a line drive to Lauren at 2nd, a pop-up to Rhiannon, and a strikeout.  In the bottom of the 3rd, Jenna hit another shot to center field.  The Aces bats were keeping the Blast center-fielder busy this game, and she caught every one.  Kelsea reached 1st on a bunt following a throwing error by the Blast, and advanced to 3rd on wild pitches.  Amy walked.  Kayla grounded out to the pitcher, but drove in another run for the Aces.  Lauren walked, but was caught stealing 2nd for the 3rd out.

In the 4th, the Blast were 3-up 3-down with two groundouts to Lauren at 2nd and one strikeout.  Brytish led off for the Aces with a single, but was left stranded after 2 groundouts and a strikeout.  In the 5th, the Blast were once again 3-up 3-down with a fly ball to Brytish at short and two strikeouts.  Amy was on base on a walk after two outs in the bottom of the 5th when time expired.

Bracket Game 5. Texas Terminators (visitor) vs. Texas Aces (home). Won 5-1. Pitchers Kimberly / Kayla.
Kayla and Kimberly combined forces for the Aces second no-hitter of the day.  Kimberly started out pitching for the Aces against the Texas Terminators.  After one groundout, the next batter reached after being hit by a pitch, and advanced to 3rd on stolen bases.  Another batter reached on an Aces defensive error that allowed a run to score.  A strikeout and a pop-up to 1st left a runner stranded.  The Aces couldn't get their timing down on the Terminator pitcher, and had two strikeouts and a groundout to the pitcher.

In the 2nd, the Terminators had a runner reach on another Aces fielding error.  But after a strikeout, a grounder to Lauren led to a double play as Lauren tagged the runner going to 2nd and got the batter at 1st.  The Aces still couldn't get their bats going, and had two strikeouts and a fly ball to center by Amy.  In the 3rd, the Terminators had one baserunner on a walk, two flyball outs to Portia in left field, and one strikeout.  Brytish led off the bottom of the 3rd with a single up the middle.  Kimberly followed with a single to score Brytish and tie the game at 1-1.  Kesha was hit by a pitch, then Portia reached on an error after a bunt to score Kimberly.  A sac bunt by Kendall drove in two more runs to clear the bases.  Jenna followed with a good single, but was left stranded after a strikeout and another caught fly ball to center by Amy.

Kayla came in to relieve Kimberly in the 4th.  She struck out the first two batters she faced, and the third one grounded out to 1st base.  Lauren led off the Aces batters with a safe bunt, but was called out for interference with the fielder on a ball hit to 2nd by Brytish.  (The fielder was playing on the baseline.)  Kimberly walked, but two runners were left stranded.  The Terminators were 3-up 3-down again in the 5th with two groundouts to 2nd and a strikeout by Kayla.  In the bottom of the 5th, Kendall led off with a walk, and scored on a single up the middle by Jenna.  Time expired with Jenna on 2nd and no outs.

Bracket Game 6. Abilene Blue Sox (visitor) vs. Texas Aces (home). Won 3-2. Pitchers Rhiannon/Kayla.
Rhiannon started off pitching in the Aces 4th game of the day.  The Blue Sox started out with what looked like a hit that got past 1st base, but it was fielded by Kimberly in right field for the out at 1st.  Rhiannon then caught a hard hit line drive back to the pitcher, and struck out the next batter for 3-up 3-down.  The Aces once again had trouble getting their bats going, and had two groundouts and a pop-up to the pitcher in the bottom of the 1st.  Kimberly caught a flyball in right field for the first out in the 2nd inning.  One runner reached base on an Aces defensive error, but two groundouts left the runner stranded.  The Aces started with a groundout in the 2nd, but followed with a single by Amy and a safe bunt by Lauren.  Brytish then walked to load the bases with only one out.  However, a flyball to 2nd and a groundout to 2nd left all three runners stranded, leaving the scoreboard blank.

The Blue Sox started the 3rd inning with a single to center field.  The Blue Sox then bunted and an Aces defensive error missed the out at 1st.  The Aces got the next batter at 1st, but a run scored.  Then another error allowed another baserunner and another run.  Kimberly caught another flyball to right field for the 2nd out.  The Blue Sox thought they could get home another run with a single up the middle, but Amy threw to Brytish who then threw home to Jenna who tagged out the runner trying to score.  In the bottom of the inning, after a strikeout, Kendall walked.  Jenna followed with a single.  With runners at 2nd and 3rd, Kelsea hit a bunt but was out at first.  Kendall tried to score but was tagged out at home on the double play, leaving the Aces trailing the Blue Sox 0-2.

The Aces got the Blue Sox 3-up 3-down in the 4th with a groundout to Rhiannon at pitcher, a groundout to Kimberly at right field, and a groundout to Lauren at 2nd.  The Aces got two quick outs in the bottom of the inning with hits back to the pitcher.  Brytish then reached on a Blue Sox defensive error.  Things were looking up as Kimberly hit a single up the middle, but a strikeout left two runners stranded with the Aces still down by 2 runs.  Kayla came in to pitch in the 5th, and the Aces got the Blue Sox 3-up 3-down again with groundouts to short and pitcher, and another flyball to Kimberly in right field.  (The Blue Sox were keeping Kimberly very busy in right field!)   The Aces started the bottom of the 5th with a groundout, but things started looking up when Kendall got a single past short.  Jenna then hit into a fielders choice back to short, but the shortstop did not go to the bag and Kendall was safe at 2nd on a Blue Sox error.  What a break for the Aces!  A groundout to 2nd advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd.  Amy then hit yet another fly ball to center field, but this one DROPPED!  We knew she would find a hole sooner or later! Two runs scored on Amy's single, tying the game at 2-2.  (After the screaming died down, Amy, standing on first base, finally realized what happened and jumped up and down!  Like a good baserunner, she ran without looking to see where the ball went.)  A groundout ended the inning, but things were looking up for the Aces.

Things were a little shaky in the top of the 6th, as the Blue Sox got a runner on base on an Aces defensive error.  But Jenna caught that runner trying to steal 2nd!  Then Kendall caught a pop-up at 1st, and a groundout to Kayla was the 3rd out.  Brytish led off with a single up the middle.  It was the first time the Aces 1st batter reached base in the game.  Kimberly hit a flyball out to center field that was caught for the first out.  Kayla came back with a single to advance Brytish to 2nd.  The Aces had a chance to take the lead, but two quick groundouts left two runners stranded.  The last out occurred with just a few seconds left on the clock, so a new inning started under regulation play.  The Aces needed to hold the Blue Sox and do something with their bats!  The Aces got the Blue Sox 3-up 3-down in the 7th, with three consecutive groundouts to short.  However, the Aces got a groundout and a strikeout before Amy hit a single down the 3rd base line.  Then Lauren reached on error.  However, both runners were left stranded on a groundout.  The game then went into International Tie Breaker rules.

The Blue Sox started with a runner at 2nd in the 8th inning.  A sac bunt advanced the runner to 3rd.  The next batter laid down a beautiful bunt in front of the plate.  Jenna grabbed the ball, checked the runner at 3rd, and started to throw to Lauren covering 1st.  However, the runner started advancing from 3rd, and Jenna held the runner.  The runner turned back to 3rd, and Jenna threw to Brytish covering 3rd, and went to cover 3rd herself.  The runner headed back for home, but no one was covering home!  Kendall ran in to cover home, which caused the runner to hesitate ever so slightly.  A very determined Brytish dove and tagged the runner from behind to get the out and keep the run from scoring!  But it wasn't over yet.  Brytish saw the batter-runner trying to advance to 3rd, and quickly threw to Jenna covering 3rd for the double-play!  What a play it was!  Now the Aces had their chance to win it.  Brytish appropriately started at 2nd.  She advanced to 3rd on a steal, but the first batter struck out.  However, Kayla then ripped one up the middle, which was fielded by the 2nd baseman, but Brytish scored.  Kayla may have been thrown out at first, but no one really cared.  WE WON!!!

Bracket Game 7. Texas Aces (visitor) vs. Texas Smash (home). Lost 0-7. Pitchers Kayla/Rhiannon / Kimberly.
The Aces had fought their way through the entire losers' bracket and made it to the championship game to face the Texas Smash again!  The Aces were right where they wanted to be in the tournament.  This being their 5th game of the day, the girls were very tired, and looked forward to their turn to sit out an inning.  The championship game time was a full hour and 45 minutes.  The Aces players fought hard, and played well in spite of being so tired.  Angela pitched for the Smash again, but this time the Aces got 4 hits off her!  Kendall hit a line drive to short in the 1st and a fly ball to left in the 4th that were both caught by great Smash defense.  Brytish hit a single in the 2nd.  Kimberly hit a single in the 3rd.  Jenna and Amy each hit singles in the 4th, but were both left stranded.  After 2 outs in the 6th, Jenna reached on a Smash error, and Brytish walked, but both were left stranded when the Smash caught a fly ball by Amy in deep right field.  Rhiannon was hit by a pitch to be the Aces only baserunner in the 7th.  The Aces fought hard, but couldn't come up with any runs.

Kayla started out pitching for the Aces.  The first batter in the 1st inning reached on an error, quickly advanced on a sac bunt, and scored on a single.  After one out in the 2nd, another single followed by a hit-by-pitch and a safe bunt loaded the bases.  A single past 2nd brought home 2 runs for the Smash.  A walk then loaded the bases again.  A fielder's choice to short got the out at home, but a triple then drove home 3 more runs for the Smash.  Another batter walked, then Rhiannon came in to finish the inning.  Brytish caught a line drive at short for the 3rd out.

After one out in the 3rd, Rhiannon walked one and allowed one hit before getting two groundouts back to the pitcher.  In the 4th, the Aces got the Smash 3-up 3-down with two groundouts and a flyball to Amy in center.  In the 5th, Rhiannon allowed one baserunner that was hit by a pitch, and got one strikeout and a groundout back to the pitcher.  Portia also caught a flyball in right field.  Kimberly pitched the rest of the game for the Aces.  After the first batter in the 6th reached on error and advanced on a groundout, a single scored the last Smash run for the game.  Kendall caught a pop-up at 1st and Kelsea caught a pop foul for the final two outs.  After the Aces at bat in the 7th, the Smash did not take their last at bat because time (finally) expired.
