Missouri City "Magic Classic" Tournament
Sta-Mo Park, Missouri City, TX
April 14-16, 2000
2 Pool/Double Elimination + Consolation
Bracket/8 Teams |
|
| After getting off to a bad start in the first bracket game, the Texas
Aces fought their way back up the losers' bracket with five straight wins
on Sunday to take the 1st place trophies at the Magic Classic tournament.
Final Tournament Results: First
place, individual trophies.
This tournament was unusual because there was a five-run
rule per inning for bracket games. |
|
| Pool Game 1.
Outlaws (visitors) vs. Texas Aces (home). Won 2-1. Pitchers Kimberly/Rhiannon. |
| The Aces scored two in the first, after Amy got on with
a bunt, and came home on a two-out "accidental" bunt by Brytish.
Kelsea followed with an RBI single to score Brytish. One walk and
a couple of Aces errors had the bases loaded for the Outlaws in the second,
but the Aces defense recovered to keep the Outlaws from scoring.
The Outlaws had one base runner in the 3rd with their only hit, and one
in the 4th on a walk. The Aces had only one base runner in the 3rd
on a walk, and one in the 4th on an Outlaws error. In the top of
the 5th, the Outlaws got two on base with an error and a walk. A
4-3 ground-out allowed one runner to score, but the Aces got the second
runner on a double play from 1st to home to 3rd that tagged the runner.
Time expired with two outs and the bases cleared. |

| Pool Game 2.
Cy-Fair Starz (visitors) vs. Texas Aces (home). Won 4-1. Pitcher Lauren. |
| Lauren pitched the full game, allowing only two hits,
with two walks and two strike-outs. The Starz got their only run
with a single in the first that was allowed to score on an Aces defensive
error. Kendall started out with a single, and scored on what should
have been an RBI ground-out by Portia (Starz error). In the 3rd, Lauren
walked, Kendall bunted, and Amy followed with an RBI single to bring home
Lauren. Portia bunted to bring home Kendall, followed by a
bunt by Brytish which brought home Amy. Kelsea got hit by a pitch
to load the bases. Rhiannon hit a hard line drive to short, and Portia
got caught not tagging up on third for the double play by the Starz.
A fly ball to short ended the inning. |

| Bracket Game
1. Katy Heat (visitors) vs. Texas Aces (home). Lost 3-2. Pitchers Rhiannon/Kimberly. |
| The game started out on a bad note as Rhiannon walked
the first two batters she faced. Then she got some help from the
defense as the lead runner was caught trying to steal 3rd, the next batter
grounded out to right field, and the last batter hit a line drive to Brytish
at short stop. The Aces got on the scoreboard in the 1st inning
with a 2-out single by Brytish, followed by an RBI double by Kelsea.
Rhiannon struck out the side in the 2nd inning. Things were looking
good for the Aces in the bottom of the second, as Jenna and Kesha each
got singles. Kimberly hit into a fielder's choice which got the lead
runner, then Lauren bunted to load the bases. However, a strikeout
and a ground out ended the inning with 3 runners stranded. |
| |
| In the top of the 3rd, Rhiannon struck out the first
batter, then walked the second. A ground out to 2nd then brought
home the runner for the Heat. In the bottom of the inning, the Aces
only had one base runner on error that was left stranded at 3rd.
Kimberly came in to pitch in the 4th, and had a fly-out and a strike out
with one hit in between. She walked one, but on the next pitch, the
runner was caught trying to steal 2nd. In the bottom of the 4th,
the Aces left two runners stranded that got on base on error and hit by
pitch. This left the score tied at 1-1, and the game went into International
Tie-Breaker rules. |
| |
| A runner started at 2nd, and an Aces fielding error allowed
the runner to score. Another error allowed another runner on base,
and an RBI single brought home another run for the Heat before the Aces
could get the final out. In the Aces last at-bat, Brytish grounded
out to advance the runner at second, then Kelsea got on base on an error
as the runner scored. Although the Heat walked another batter, they
got two outs on a strike out and a fly ball to 2nd to win the game. |

2. Texas Aces (visitors) vs. Magic (home). Won 11-0. Pitchers Rhiannon/Lauren. |
| Sunday the Aces showed up to play ball. The Aces
got on the board quickly in the first inning, with RBI doubles by Portia
and Kesha, RBI single by Jenna, and an RBI by Brytish. Rhiannon then
retired the side with two strike outs and one ground. In the second
inning, Kendall walked, Portia singled, Brytish got on on a dropped fly
ball, then Kelsea and Jenna each singled in a run. Kesha then cleared
the based with a 3 RBI triple. It was 3 up - 3 down in the botton of the
inning. Kendall had an RBI double in the 3rd, followed by a single
from Amy and an RBI single from Kelsea. Lauren came in to pitch in
the 3rd. After walking the first batter, Lauren then struck out the
next three, keeping it a no-hitter for the Aces. |

3. Kingwood Fireballs (visitor) vs. Texas Aces (home). Won 4-0. Pitchers
Rhiannon/ Kimberly. |
| The Aces defense started out strong, getting two ground-outs
a line drive out in the first, but the Fireballs answered back, getting
a ground-out, and a line drive out. Brytish then got on base on a
single, but was caught stealing 2nd. The Fireballs only had one base
runner in the second on a single, with one strike-out and two ground-outs
back to the pitcher. The second inning turned out to be a big one for the
Aces' bats. Kelsea started out the 2nd with a single, followed by
a bunt from Amy. Jenna got on with a bunt and scored Kelsea, followed
by an RBI single from Kesha. Rhiannon hit a sac bunt to advance the
runners, and a bunt by Lauren brought Jenna home. Another sac bunt
by Kendall scored Kesha. A ground-out to short ended the inning,
but the damage was done! Rhiannon struck out two more in the 3rd
and walked one, but a great catch by Kesha on a fly ball to left field
left the runner stranded. The Fireballs pitching and defense didn't
allow another base runner for the Aces in the remaining 3 innings.
Kimberly pitched in the the 4th, and got a quick fly-out and a strike out,
followed by two singles, but a ground-out back to the pitcher left the
runners on base. In the 5th, after one out, two runners got on base
on two Aces fielding errors. The Aces strong defense recovered, as
they kept the Fireballs from scoring with a double play on a ground-out
to right field and a throw to the plate to get the runner trying to go
home. |

4. Texas Aces (visitors) vs. Tigers (home). Won 12 (13*) -1. Pitchers Kimberly/Lauren. |
| This was our first meeting with the Tigers, and the Aces
weren't sure what to expect. Kendall led off the Aces batters with
a single. Portia and Brytish got on base on Tiger errors, while Kendall
scored. Amy and Jenna each had RBI singles, and Kesha grounded out
for an RBI, and the side retired with 5 runs and 1 out. The Tigers
started out with a base hit. After Kimberly struck out the next batter,
Amy caught a fly ball in center field then threw to first and caught the
runner off base for a double play. The Tigers got three quick ground
outs against the Aces in the 2nd, and the Aces echoed back with three ground
outs against the Tigers in the bottom of the inning. |
| |
| Portia led off with a single in the 3rd, and Brytish
walked. Kelsea hit a 2 RBI single, but later got caught trying to
steal third. A strike-out and a ground-out ended the inning.
Lauren came in to pitch in the 3rd, and started out with a walking the
first batter. The batter illegally took second base on the passed
ball. The umpires let her have the base. (After the game, the
umpire checked the rules and agreed he had made a bad call, and the runner
should not have been allowed to take an extra base on the walk.) The runer
advanced to 3rd on the next pitch. A ground-out to short then scored
the only Tigers run. Two more batters walked, but were left stranded. |
| |
| Kesha walked in the 5th, and a ground out followed by
a bunt by Lauren moved her to third. Kendall then walked to load the bases.
Portia brought home 2 runs on a double, followed by another two-run double
by Brytish. Kelsea hit a single, and advanced to second on a passed
ball. Amy then followed with another 2-run double, although only
one of the runs officially counted due to the five run rule. Again, the
side retired with 5 runs and only 1 out, with a runner on 2nd. After
one out, the Tigers #20 hit a good shot to left field for a double.
It was one of the best hits of the game, but, unfortunately for the Tigers,
time had expired and they didn't get to finish the inning because they
couldn't catch up due to the five run rule. |

5. Katy Heat (visitor) vs. Texas Aces (home). Won 5-1. Pitcher Kimberly. |
| At last we meet again... The Aces were looking
forward to playing the Katy Heat again, after losing to them in the first
bracket game. Kimberly pitched the entire game for the Aces, and
allowed only two hits, with one walk and one strikeout over 5 innings. |
| |
| The Heat led off with a single, then advanced the runner
with a sac bunt. A line drive to 1st, followed by a ground out left
the runner stranded. The Aces had two quick ground outs and a strike
out in the 1st. In the top of the second, after one ground out, an
Aces error allowed the Heat a base runner. One batter walked, and
then another Aces defensive error allowed the Heat to score the first run
of the game. Two more quick outs left two runners stranded. In the
bottom of the 2nd, Amy got on base with a bunt, and came home on an RBI
double by Jenna. Kimberly then brought Jenna home with another RBI
double before the side was retired. |
| |
| The Aces defense got the Heat 3 up - 3 down in the 3rd,
with two ground outs and a line drive to Lauren at 2nd. However,
the Heat defense did the same to the Aces, with two ground outs and a caught
fly ball to center field on a shot by Brytish. It was a beautiful
hit, and a great catch by the Heat center-fielder. Things looked
a little shaky in the 4th, as the Aces had a 2-1 lead. The first
batter got on base by an Aces error, but was quickly caught stealing 2nd.
The next batter was hit by a pitch and took 1st, and then advanced to 2nd
on a passed ball. The next batter tapped a little pop-up back to
the pitcher, and Kimberly made a great stretching catch for the out, then
quickly threw to second and caught the runner for a double play.
After one out, Amy got the Aces started with a single to left field, followed
by a single by Jenna. Kesha followed with another single, driving
home Amy. With runners at 1st and 2nd, Kimberly hit into a force
out at 3rd base, then a ground out left two runners stranded. |
| |
| The Heat lead off the 5th inning with a double out to
deep left field, but three quick outs left the runner stranded at third.
Kendall started off the Aces with a walk, and came home on a double down
the third base line by Brytish. Kelsea hit another RBI single to
score Brytish. Time expired, and the game ended with a runner on
first with only 1 out. The Aces sent the Heat home in 3rd place. |

6. Sugar Land Outlaws (visitor) vs. Texas Aces (home). Won 5-3. Pitcher
Rhiannon. |
| In the fifth game of the day, the Aces looked pretty
tired. It had been a long day. The umpires must have thought
so, too, because we played the championship game with only one umpire. |
| |
| The Outlaws got on base with a walk after one ground
out. The runner advanced on a stolen base, then a single brought
in the run for the Outlaws. The next batter hit a grounder to center,
and the Aces made the force out at 2nd, followed by a ground out to short.
The Aces then had two strike outs followed by a fly ball to center.
One ground out and a base hit got another Outlaws runner on base, but a
hit to Lauren at 2nd resulted in the force out to Brytish covering 2nd
base, and another hit to 1st resulted in an unassisted out by Kimberly.
Kelsea got the Aces started with a single in the 2nd, and Jenna walked,
but two strike outs and a ground out left both runners stranded. |
| |
| In the 3rd, the Outlaws only had one base runner on a
walk, but the Aces couldn't come up with any base runners. In the
4th, a dropped fly ball to center gave the Outlaws a base runner, but the
Aces again made the force out at 2nd. A fly ball out and a ground
out left the runner stranded. In the bottom of the 4th, things weren't
looking too good for the Aces as they got a quick strike out and a ground
out, but the fans started cheering "Rally, rally, on 2", and the girls
seemed to come to life again. Amy got on base on a bunt, and scored
on a single by Jenna. Kesha followed with a base hit that advanced
Jenna to third. However, a strike out ended the inning, but the Aces
were now on the scoreboard. In the 5th, one defensive error on two
outs gave the Outlaws one base runner, but a ground out quickly shut them
down. The Aces then had three consecutive ground outs to end regulation
time with the score tied 1-1. |
| |
| In the tie-breaker inning, the Outlaws started with a
hit to Brytish at short stop. Brytish turned and tagged the runner
trying to advance from second before making the throw to first. However,
there was no field umpire to make the call, and the umpire behind the plate
didn't see the tag. The throw to first missed the out, leaving two
runners on base. Then an Aces defensive error missed an out as one
runner scored. After a ground out, a single to center field scored
another run for the Outlaws, but the Aces made the 8-4-2 play to get the
second runner trying to come home. Another ground out ended the inning
with the Outlaws leading the Aces 3-1. With the help of the cheering
fans, the girls' bats came alive. Portia went in for Lauren to run
at 2nd. Brytish led off the batting with a double that advanced Portia
to 3rd. Kelsea bunted safely and scored Portia. Amy followed
with a single to score Brytish. The score was once again tied, with
runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs. Jenna then ripped a double out
to left field, bringing in two runs to win the game! Way to go girls! |
