| Texas Aces Win NSA Qualifier Championship
The Texas Aces 12U went undefeated in the NSA Qualifier at Papa Blakely's on May 19-20, 2001. The girls didn't allow more than 2 runs in any game, with two shutouts. They won their first two bracket games against the Tomball Sudden Impact (7-0) and the TCB Extreme(8-2). The one nail-biter game of the tournament was in their third bracket game, facing the San Antonio Rough Riders. Kayla did a great job pitching in that game. She struck out the side in the 2nd, and had three other strikeouts in the game. She walked four total, but none in the same inning, and allowed only two hits over seven innings. The Aces had trouble hitting in the first two innings, but tough defense and strong pitching kept the game scoreless through the 4th. The Aces had two hits in the 3rd, but couldn't produce a run. Jenna led off with a single in the 5th, and advanced to 3rd on a sac bunt and a groundout, and scored on a single by Kayla. Kayla walked the first batter in the bottom of the 5th, who ended up scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game. The game went to ITB in the 6th, with Bonnie starting on 2nd. After advancing to 3rd on a passed ball, she scored on a groundout by Kesha. In the bottom of the inning, the Aces missed the lead-off batter at 1st on a bunt, but successfully tagged out the runner from 2nd trying to advance to 3rd on the bunt. However, after the second runner advanced to 3rd, the umpire awarded her home plate after making a bad call of a balk on the pitch by Kayla. This run tied up the game again, forcing a second ITB inning. In the 7th, Megan started out on 2nd, and was driven in on a single by Jenna. Although the Rough Riders advanced their runner to 3rd with a sac bunt, a strike out and an easy fly ball to Brytish at short ended the game with the Aces ahead 3-2. The Aces easily won the championship game against a tired Lake Jackson Wipeout, who had just beat the Rough Riders in a come-from-behind victory. The Aces scored 7 runs in the 1st inning on 6 hits, and 3 more hits in the 3rd brought home another run. Rhiannon pitched a great game, allowing only one hit. One Aces error allowed a baserunner in the 2nd, which scored on a groundout, and another error in the 4th allowed another baserunner which was driven in by the Wipeout's only hit. The Texas Aces 12U are now qualified for NSA Nationals in Jupiter, Florida in July.
