| Texas Aces Girls Bring Home National
Softball Title
The Texas Aces girls fastpitch softball team based in Pearland, TX, won the USSSA 11U World Series Championship in Lakeland, Florida on August 3, 2001. Since the entire Texas Aces 2001 team was made up of first year 12U girls, they decided to qualify for the first ever 11U National tournament offered by USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association), and were determined to win the National Championship title. In April, the Texas Aces played in a 12U USSSA qualifier held at Softball USA in Houston as the only 11U team entered, and placed 2nd behind the Cy-Fair Starz, made up of 11 & 12 year old girls. In July, the girls traveled to Garland, TX, and played in the USSSA State tournament, again as the only 11U team entered. They finished this tournament in 4th place, behind several strong 12U teams. This tournament secured their berth to the USSSA World Series Tournament held in Lakeland, FL, July 30-August 3. On the opening day of the USSSA World Series, the Texas Aces won the Overall Team Skills Competition. In the hitting competition, Jenna took 2nd place, and teammates Kesha and Portia took 5th and 6th place. In throwing, Kendall took 1st place, and Megan took 4th. In pitching, Kayla took 2nd and Rhiannon took 6th. In running, Bonnie finished 3rd, followed by Brytish 4th, Amy 6th, and Linsdey 10th. Although the favored hometown team Twilight Maniacs took first place in two categories, the consistent high finishes of all the Aces girls put them on top in the overall category. For their 1st place overall finish, they received a $50 gift certificate for sports equipment. In pool play, the Texas Aces had a combined 7-inning no-hitter in a 4-1 win over the Arkansas Flames. The Aces shutout the Rebels of North Carolina in a 11-0 win. The Aces had another combined no-hitter in an 11-2 win over the Florida Sudden Impact. In the fourth pool game, the Texas Aces had a no-hit shutout as they run-ruled the Ohio Express 15-0 in two and one-half innings. In the fifth and final pool game, the Texas Aces had their only loss to the Twilight Maniacs, in a 4-1 win by the hometown team. The Texas Aces finished pool play 4-1 for 2nd place, earning a bye for the first round of bracket play. In their first bracket game, with a rain delay after the first inning till the following morning, the Texas Aces beat the North Carolina Rebels by a score of 7-3. In their 2nd bracket game, which had two rain delays, the Texas Aces faced the Twilight Maniacs. The Texas Aces won 10-2 on only 4 hits, having forced the Maniacs to make 7 errors. The Maniacs beat the North Carolina Rebels and came back to play the Texas Aces in the championship game. The Aces allowed two runs in the first inning, but came back and scored five. However, after allowing another run in the 3rd, the Aces walked in a run in the 5th to put the Maniacs within one run, now trailing 5-4. With bases loaded and no outs, Rhiannon came in to pitch for the Aces. The first batter she faced hit a line drive to Jenna at 3rd, and Brytish at shortstop quickly covered 3rd base for the 5-6 double play. The Aces pitching and defense allowed no more baserunners the remaining innings. Final score Texas Aces 5-4 over the Twilight Maniacs. ACES WON THE TOURNAMENT!!!! At the end of the tournament, Rhiannon, Megan, and Bonnie were named to the "All World Team". Rhiannon received the "Outstanding Pitcher Award" for the tournament, and Bonnie received the "Tournament MVP Award". Coach Kim received the "Manager of the Year Award". However, all the Aces girls deserved recognition for their outstanding plays during the tournament. Kayla not only pitched well, but led the Aces in batting for the tournament with 11 hits. Rhiannon played strong at 1st base in addition to her outstanding pitching. Brytish made many incredible plays at shortstop, and helped the team with many hits. Kendall played strong at 1st and 2nd base. Lindsey played fantastic at 2nd and made a couple of double plays. Jenna, Megan, and Kelsea were all solid behind the plate and at 3rd base. Bonnie did great as leadoff batter, and helped the team with pitching and great center field work. Kesha played well in left and had a strong bat during pool play, but unfortunately was unable to play the bracket games on Friday due to an ear infection. Amy did a great job filling in at left field. Portia covered the right field, and made several great catches and plays to first base. All the hits that went to the outfield were kept to singles or doubles. In 8 games, the Texas Aces allowed 24 hits, and only 4 of those were doubles! |
