Texas Aces Take 4th of 24 Teams in USFA State
The Texas Aces played strong in the games on Friday and Saturday, but the bats went cold on Sunday.  However, great defense and pitching made for a close game against the Outlaws on Sunday morning, with a 0-0 score after 5 innings, which ended up a 0-1 loss in ITB.  The bats warmed up a little in the next bracket game, only to go cold again as the Aces lost to the Katy Heat, whom they had sent to the loser's bracket on Saturday.  The Aces didn't reach their goal of making it to the Championship game, but it was a reality check after winning 5 tournaments in a row!  Finishing 4th out of 24 teams isn't so bad, either.

Pool 1 - vs Texas Xpress.  Aces won 7-0.
Rhiannon and the defense allowed only one hit during 4 innings played.  Lindsey made some great catches as shortstop on pop-ups at the 2nd base bag, and also hit a triple in the first inning to score the Aces first runner that reached on an error.  Amber and Lindsey covered the middle infield for assists in all the outs in the 2nd.  The Aces bats came alive in the bottom of the inning with consecutive singles by Kendall and Kesha, and a 2-run triple by Rhiannon.  That was followed with another single by Brytish to bring home Kelsea (running for Rhiannon).  On one out, Amber hit a safe slap, and scored on a single by Lindsey. Megan hit a 2-out single to score Lindsey, giving the Aces 5 more runs.  The Xpress hit a single up the middle to start out the 3rd, but the runner was quickly forced out at 2nd with a ground ball to Amber. Kesha led off the bottom of the 3rd with a single, and scored on a double by Rhiannon.  An Xpress batter reached on a hit-by-pitch in the 4th, but was quickly forced out at 2nd.

Pool 2 - vs Gulf Coast Breakers.  Aces won 4-2.
Lindsey made her catching debut for the Aces, giving the position a try in case Megan needed a break over the weekend.  The Breakers first batter hit a single up the middle, stole 2nd, and advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch.  A sac fly would put a run on the board early for the Breakers.  Amy led off with a single, and stole 2nd, while Amber walked.  A fly-out to right caught Amy in a double-play, and a ground out left the Aces trailing 0-1.  The Breakers had one baserunner reach on an error, but a quick throw by Lindsey to Rhiannon picked off the runner at 1st.  The Breakers hit a single up the middle in the 3rd, but the runner was left stranded.  The Aces bats got busy in the 3rd, as Rhiannon led off with a single, followed by a single by BrytishKelsea (running for Rhiannon) scored on a wild pitch as Amy walked.  Amber walked to load the bases, but was forced out at 2nd on a grounder by Kayla that brought home BrytishAmy scored on a wild pitch, and Megan reached on an error.  Kendall walked to load the bases again, and Kesha hit a single to bring in another run, putting 4 runs on the board for the Aces.  The Breakers hit a 2-out double in the 4th, and the runner scored as the Aces made a defensive error, but the side was soon shut down.

Bracket 1 - vs Texas Xpress.  Aces won 6-1.
Kayla struck out the first batter she faced on a called strike.  The next batter hit a single up the middle, followed by another single, but the Aces got the lead runner in a run-down at 2nd, and a groundout ended the rally.  Amy led off with a walk, but was forced out at 2nd.  After a pop-up to 3rd base, the Aces had a 2-out rally as Kayla singled, Kendall singled to bring home Brytish, Megan singled, and Kesha hit a double to bring home Kayla and KendallMegan scored on a wild pitch, and Rhiannon singled to bring home Kesha.  Five hits and five runs on two outs!   The Xpress led off the 2nd with a single, and scored on a fielder's choice.  Lindsey walked in the 2nd, but was left stranded.  Kayla walked the first batter in the 3rd, and another reached on an error, but Kayla struck out the side to leave both stranded.  In the bottom of the 3rd, the Aces started another 2-out rally as Kesha hit a single and came home on another single by Rhiannon to put one more run on the board.  In the 4th, after one out, Kayla walked a batter, but the runner was quickly retired on a fielder's choice, and a strikeout sat down the side. Amy led off the 4th with a single, and Brytish reached on error, but a fielder's choice got the lead runner.  Kayla followed with a single, but Brytish was caught trying to go home.  Another groundout left two stranded.  In the 5th, on one out, the Xpress reached on error, but a fielder's choice got the runner at 2nd.  Kayla walked another, but the runner was called out at 1st for returning to the safety base instead of the white bag.

Bracket 2 - vs Katy Heat.  Aces won 4-0.
The Aces faced the Katy Heat in the winner's bracket Saturday night, with the Heat as home team.  The Aces couldn't get anything started in the 1st.  The Heat's first batter grounded to Amber in right field who made the throw to 1st.  The next batter got on with a bunt, and advanced on a single.  A sac bunt advanced the runners to 2nd & 3rd, but a fly-out to Amber in right field left both stranded.  The Heat had only one more baserunner in the game, when Bonnie hit a 2-out triple in the 3rd inning, and tried to score on a overthrow to 3rd base.  However, Kendall recovered the ball and threw to Megan who got the out at the plate!  Kendall walked on one out in the 4th, followed by a single from Megan.  After a fly-out to center field, another walk loaded the bases.  Kesha drove in a run with another single before a groundout left bases loaded.  Amy hit a one-out single in the 5th, and advanced on a groundout.  Kendall started a 2-out rally with a single, and Megan brought home a run with another single.  Lindsey brought home two with a single, but was left stranded on a groundout.  Three fly-outs ended the game with the Aces on top 4-0.

Bracket 3 - vs Sugar Land Outlaws.  Aces lost 0-1.
The Aces couldn't get anything started with the bats in the 1st inning, with 2 strikeouts and a fly out to right field.  Kayla pitched in a very close game against the Outlaws.  After two outs, a single got the Outlaws a baserunner.  However, Kayla picked off the runner at 2nd base on a throw to LindseyKendall hit a single in the 2nd, but was left stranded.  The Outlaws also had one hit in the 2nd that also left stranded.  Rhiannon was hit by a pitch to start out the 3rd, and advanced on a sac bunt and a groundout, but was left stranded.  Megan reached on an error in the 4th, and advanced on a groundout and a safe bunt by Kendall, but 2 strikeouts left both stranded.  The Outlaws had one hit in the 4th, and one hit in the 5th, but both times runners were left stranded, sending the game into ITB with the score tied 0-0.  Amy started at 2nd for the Aces, but couldn't advance with a strikeout, a line drive, and a groundout.  After Megan got the first out on a pop-up to the catcher, a groundout advanced the Outlaws runner to 3rd.  Kayla struck out the next batter, but a dropped 3rd strike led to a throw to 1st base, where the umpire called the batter safe on a close call, and the runner from 3rd scored to end the game.

Bracket 4 - vs Queen of Diamonds.  Aces won 3-0.
The Queen of Diamonds sent home the Texas Xpress in a see-saw game that ended with the QOD ahead, leaving the Aces to face the QOD.  The Aces were home team this time, and Rhiannon pitched.  Both sides had 3-up-3- down in the first inning.  The QOD lead-off batter reached on an overthrow to first base, but Amber backed up the throw and quickly got it back to Kayla at first.  Kayla tagged the runner as she pointed out to the umpire that the batter had returned to the safety base, not the white bag, and the umpire called her out! Megan led off with the single for the Aces in the 2nd, and advanced on a wild pitch and a groundout.  Kendall bunted safely while the runner was held at 3rd.  Kesha grounded out to score Megan.  In the 3rd, Amber walked on one out, followed by a single by Brytish.  After a strikeout, Megan hit a single to bring home Amber, and Brytish scored when the QOD overthrew 3rd.  After one groundout in the 4th, the QOD hit a single up the middle, followed by a single to right field.  However, the next batter hit to Kendall at 3rd base, who got the lead runner at 3rd, and a groundout left two stranded. Kesha hit a single in the 4th, but was forced out at 2nd and one runner was left stranded.  The QOD were 3-up-3-down in the 5th, with a called strikeout to end the game.

Bracket 5 - vs Katy Heat.  Aces lost 0-4.
The home team advantage didn't help the Aces in the next game against the Katy Heat.  Things looked good as the Aces got the Heat 3-up-3-down with two groundouts and a pop-up to short.  Amy led off with a single for the Aces.  However, three fly balls to the outfield ended in three outs.  The Aces again got the Heat 3-up-3-down, with a ground out, a line drive to short, and a very foul pop-up that Rhiannon caught near the fence.  The Aces again led off the inning with a hit on a single by Kayla, but she was left stranded.  After two groundouts, Kayla walked one in the 3rd, but the runner was stranded on another groundout.  A groundout and two more flyouts to the outfield kept the Aces off the bases in the 3rd.  Rhiannon came in to pitch in the 4th, and allowed triple to the first batter.  Rhiannon held the runner but failed to get the out at first on a bunt back to the pitcher, and on the next bunt, the Aces lost the runner on 3rd in a hot box with an overthrow.  After the first run scored, the Aces struggled to regain control, but allowed three more runs to score on a squeeze play by the Heat and fielding errors.  Lindsey led off the bottom of the 4th with a double, followed by a walk by Megan, but a pop-up, a fielder's choice, and a flyout to right left two runners stranded. Kayla came back in and got the Heat 3-up-3-down in the 5th. Amy tried to rally in the 5th with a 2-out single, but was left stranded.  The Heat did to us just what we did to them earlier in the tournament, run for run!
