Texas Aces Take 1st at Peppers Cupid Shootout
Being the only undefeated team in the 14U bracket when the tournament was canceled on Sunday, the Texas Aces were awarded 1st place in the Cupid Shootout tournament February 8-9, 2003.  The field of 14U teams had dwindled down to only 5 teams willing to brave the elements, with some teams dropping at the last minute.  However, even with several players missing during the pool games due to basketball and volleyball tournaments and injury, the Aces managed to come out on top once bracket got going, beating the Cy-Fair Starz 9-1 Saturday night and the Humble Cobras 5-0 on Sunday morning.  Congratulations to the team for once again going undefeated in bracket play.  We wish Emily a speedy recovery from her ankle injury, and congratulate Lindsey and Rhiannon for taking runner-up in their district basketball tournament, and Ashley whose team won their volleyball tournament.

Pool Game 1 - vs Cy-Fair Starz.  Aces lost 1-3.
The Aces played with only 8 players, leaving them short an outfielder.  The Starz got two hits in the first, but came out with no runs.  After two hits put two runners on board in the 2nd, a double to the outfield brought home two runs for the Starz, and two more hits in the 3rd put up one more run.  Offensively, the Aces couldn't come through with the runs needed, especially with the favorite bats missing!  Although the girls loaded the bases with consecutive singles from Kelsea, Amber, and Kendall in the 3rd, only one runner was brought home as two runners got out on fielder's choices at the plate.  The Aces got started again with two more consecutive singles in the 4th by Kesha and Kelsea, but time expired before they could put any more runs on the board.

Pool Game 2 - vs Texas Peppers.  Aces won 6-1.
Again playing with 8, the Aces were stronger in the 2nd pool game.  The Peppers hit a double in the 1st and scored on another hit, and had one more hit in the 2nd.  Kendall and Siera each had hits in the 1st, but were left stranded.  Kelsea and Kendall walked in the 2nd, and came home on a double by MeganSiera and Stephanie walked in the 3rd, and advanced on a ground out.  Kelsea and Amber also walked to bring in a run, and Kendall got a single to bring home two more.  Megan grounded out to bring home another run, as time expired with the Aces still batting.

Bracket 1 - vs Cy-Fair Starz.  Aces won 9-1.
Two more of the Aces made it in time for the first bracket game Saturday night, so the Aces played with 10.  The Aces batted first and Lana Jo hit a double on one out, and advanced to 3rd on a single by MeganMegan stole 2nd, and Rhiannon followed with a single to bring home Lana Jo as Megan advanced to 3rd.  When Rhiannon moved to 2nd, the Starz went for the out, but failed.  However, Megan was caught trying to score.  Then Rhiannon was called out on a close tag trying to advance to 3rd, giving the Starz a double play.  The Starz had one base runner on an Aces error in the 1st.  Siera led off with a double in the 2nd, advanced on a ground out, and scored on a single by StephanieRhiannon got the Starz 3-up-3-down with three ground outs in the 2nd. Amber led off  the 3rd with a single, advanced on a ground out, and scored on a double by MeganMegan advanced on a ground out, and scored on a single by SieraRhiannon walked the lead-off batter in the 3rd, and struck out the next batter.  Another batter reached on an Aces error, and the Aces got the lead runner on a fielder's choice on a grounder back to Rhiannon, thrown to Kelsea at 3rd.  The one runner remaining managed to advance to 3rd and scored on a passed ball that was a called strike.  No fault to the catcher, though, just Rhiannon's new curve pitch that is really starting to break!  Lindsey led off the 4th with a single, followed by a double by KeshaKelsea reached 1st safely to load the bases as the Starz held Lindsey at 3rd.  A ground out back to the pitcher took the lead runner at the plate, leaving the bases loaded.  Lana Jo hit one through the infield to bring home one run. Another grounder to the pitcher took the lead runner at the plate for the 2nd out.  The Aces rallied on two as Rhiannon brought home two runs with a single to right field, and Siera brought home two more with a triple to right field.  However, Siera was called out as the umpire said she was safe until took her foot off 3rd with the tag still applied.  (I guess hands on the base didn't get noticed!)  No problem, with the Aces putting 5 runs on the board that inning.  Rhiannon finished up the game with a strikeout and two quick ground outs.  The game was a no-hitter, with one walk, and 4 strikeouts, and two defensive errors.

Bracket 2 - vs Humble Cobras.  Aces won 5-0.
The Aces had to return for an 8:00 am game on Sunday morning, with the weather very cold and drizzling.  The Aces were home team this time, with Siera pitching.  The Cobras had 3-up-3-down in the first with an unsuccessful bunt fielded by Lana Jo, a fly ball to Ashley in right, and a pop-up to Lindsey at short.  Amber led off the 1st with a single, followed by a single from Lana JoMegan followed with another single to load the bases.  Siera hit a single through the infield to bring home the Aces first run.  However, on a line drive to Caitlin (a former Aces player -- Hi Caitlin!!) at short, the Cobras caught Siera off base at 1st for a double play.  A ground out left two stranded.  On one out, the Cobras hit a triple.  However, the runner was left stranded as Siera mowed down the next two batters with a called strikeout and a swinging strikeout.  On two outs in the 2nd, the Aces rallied again as Ashley hit a double, and came home on another double by Amber.  After two ground outs in the 3rd, the Cobras got a base runner on a walk, followed by a single, but a fly out to Stephanie in center left both stranded.  The Aces bats were hot in the bottom of the 3rd, as Megan led off with a single, and scored on a triple by SieraSiera scored on a single by LindseyLindsey advanced on a ground out, and scored on a single by Stephanie.  After another out, Ashley walked.  Amber was batting when the game was called, with the Aces up by 5.  Great job by Siera, both on the mound and at the plate, as she got yet another shutout and batted 1000 for the game!
