Texas Aces Win Texas Outlaws Spring Roundup!
With the full team together and the weather conditions right, the weekend was a good one for softball.  The Aces played strong on Saturday,  not allowing any runs to score against them in the first two bracket games against the Needville Sizzlers and the Naturals.  However, they ran into a little trouble in the 3rd game against the Tejas Titans, and were down after three innings. Timely hits in the game put runs on the board for the Aces, and sent the game into ITB.  The Aces came through with enough runs to win the game and avoid the loser's bracket again!  On Sunday, the Aces faced the always tough Katy Heat as the only other undefeated team in the tournament. After six regulation innings and one ITB inning, the game remained scoreless.  In the start of the 2nd ITB inning, the Katy Heat coach made a substitution re-entry error, and inadvertently removed their only pitcher from the game.  The Heat forfeited the game at that point, and went on to face the Naturals in the losers bracket.  After beating the Naturals 1-0, the Heat was back to face the Aces again.  Although the Aces took an early lead, the Heat came back to tie it up and force another ITB.  This time the Heat was able to get the run across to defeat the Aces. However, the Heat chose to forfeit the 'if game', to prevent possible injury to their pitcher. Although the Aces would have preferred to win the final game on the field, we have to commend the Katy Heat for thinking of their pitcher first, and graciously accepting 2nd place.

Pool Game 1 - vs Katy Heat.  Aces lost 1-4.
The Aces were home team in the first pool game, with Siera pitching.  After a ground out in the 1st,  one batter walked and another hit a single.  On a bunt for a fielder's choice, the Aces failed to get the out at home and an error allowed another runner to score, leaving the batter runner on third.  Another error allowed another run to score. However, Lindsey made a great play at short when she snagged a grounder and touched 2nd before firing to 1st for the double play. Amber led off the bottom of the 1st with a single, but was left stranded.  Both teams had 3-up-3-down in the 2nd.  The Heat also had 3-up-3-down in the 3rd.  On one out, Kesha hit a double in the 3rd, and advanced on a sac bunt by Ashley. Kesha scored on a wild pitch while Stephanie and Kendall walked.  Both were left stranded.  The leadoff Heat batter walked in the 4th, and scored on an error.  Megan hit a single in the 4th, and Kelsea and Lindsey walked, but all three were left stranded.

Pool Game 2 - vs Texas Royals.  Aces won 16-1.
The Aces were again home team (why never in bracket?!!).  In the 1st, Rhiannon struck out the first two batters, walked one, then struck out the next.  Ashley led off the batting order for the Aces with a double, and advanced on a ground out.  Emily reached on an error on a missed fly ball to center, as Ashley scored. Kesha walked, and Emily scored on a wild pitch. Stephanie reached on error, and Amber hit a single, but both were left stranded. Rhiannon shut down the side again with two more strikeouts and a pop up to Amber at 2nd.  Lindsey reached on an error, and Megan walked as Lindsey scored on a wild pitch. Siera singled, and Lana Jo reached on error as Megan and Siera scored. Ashley brought home a run with a single. Kendall hit a triple to left field, but was called out at 3rd, even though she had knocked the base loose before the tag!  Emily followed with another triple, and came home on a single by KeshaKesha was left stranded.  Siera came in to pitch for the Aces, and allowed two hits and one run before shutting down the side with a ground out and two strikeouts.  In the bottom of the 3rd, Kelsea reached on a dropped 3rd strike. Rhiannon followed with a single.  Lindsey was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Megan hit a single for one RBI. Siera followed with another single and another RBI. Lana Jo cleared the bases with a three-run triple! Ashley followed with a single to bring home Lana Jo, and Kendall followed with a single to bring home Ashley.  At that point, the Aces were leading by 15 runs (with no outs in the 3rd), so the game was called on mercy rule.

Bracket 1 - vs Needville Sizzlers.  Aces won 10-0.
The Aces were home team for the first bracket game (okay, we were home team for one bracket game!)  Siera pitched for the Aces and shut down the side with two pop ups to the infield and a strikeout.  On one out, Kendall reached on an error, and Lana Jo followed with a single.  Ashley followed with a bunt to load the bases. Kesha cleared the bases with a three-run tripleSiera hit an RBI single, advanced on stolen bases, and scored on a wild pitch. Stephanie hit a single, but was left stranded.  Siera shut down the side again with a pop up to Lana Jo at short, and two strikeouts.  Kendall hit a single on one out in the bottom of the 2nd.  Lana Jo followed with a safe bunt, and Ashley walked as Kendall scored on a passed ball.  Kesha hit a single for two RBIs.  Siera followed with an single to bring home KeshaEmily hit a single, and Stephanie hit a safe bunt to load the bases.  On a squeeze play, Siera was forced out at home, and another fielder's choice left three stranded.  Siera shut down the side again in the 3rd with two ground outs to Amber at 2nd and a strikeout. Megan led off with a single.  On a very low foul ball caught by the catcher (did not clear the catcher's head, 1st pitch), the umpire called Lindsey out, and let the Sizzlers have a double play when Megan didn't get back to 1st. Ashley rallied on two with a single, and scored on a single by KeshaKesha was left stranded. Siera once again shut down the side with two strikeouts and a ground out back to the pitcher.  The game was called on run rule.  Another perfect game for Siera, with no hits, no walks, no errors, and six strikeouts.

Bracket 2 - vs Naturals.  Aces won 3-0.
The Aces batted first, and had three ground outs in the 1st.  Rhiannon pitched for the Aces, and got the Naturals shut down with a bunt back to the pitcher, a strikeout, and a pop up to 2nd. Kesha hit a single on one out in the 2nd, but was left stranded.  In the bottom of the 2nd, after a pop up to Amber at 2nd and a strikeout, Rhiannon allowed one hit up the middle before striking out the last batter. Amber hit a single on two outs in the bottom of the 3rd, but was left stranded.  The Aces got the Naturals 3-up-3-down in the 3rd with a grounder back to the pitcher, a great unassisted out at 1st by Amber on a slap past the first baseman, and a fly ball to shallow center caught by Lana Jo. Lana Jo hit a double on one out in the 4th.  On an attempted pick off at 2nd,  the ball was missed and Lana Jo scored when she slid under the tag at the plate. Siera reached on a dropped 3rd strike, and scored on a single by KeshaKesha was left stranded. Rhiannon shut down the side in the 4th with two strikeouts and a ground out back to the pitcher.  Kendall led off the 5th with a double, and advanced on a sac bunt by Kelsea. Amber hit into a fielder's choice that failed to get the out at home as Kendall scored. Amber was left stranded.  On two outs in the bottom of the 5th, Rhiannon allowed the Naturals 2nd hit of the game.  However, the runner was quickly caught stealing on a throw from Megan to Lindsey to end the game!

Bracket 3 - vs Tejas Titans.  Aces won 6-4.
The Aces batted first (visitors again!!!)  Lindsey hit a single on one out, but was left stranded. Siera started out pitching for the Aces.  In the bottom of the first, the Titans had three fly ball outs to center and left field, and one double that was left stranded. Ashley led off the 2nd with a double for the Aces, but was left stranded.  The Titans led off the bottom of the 2nd with a double, and the runner advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch.  The Aces failed to get the out at the plate on a bunt. The next batter hit a triple for another RBI.  Rhiannon came in to pitch, and walked the first batter she faced as the runner on 3rd scored on a wild pitch.  Rhiannon then shut down the side with a strikeout and two pop ups.  Kendall walked and Megan hit a single in the 3rd, but both were left stranded.  The Titans had 3-up-3-down in the bottom of the 3rd with a strikeout and two ground outs.  With the Aces down 0-3 after three innings, the girls battled back in the 4th.  Ashley led off with a walk, and scored on a single by Rhiannon. Rhiannon advanced on a sac bunt, and scored on a triple by Stephanie. Kendall hit a hard line drive that we thought would bring in the tying run, but the Titan shortstop jumped up and caught it, leaving Stephanie stranded.  Still down by one run, the Aces had to quickly shut down the side to start a new inning.  Two ground outs and a strikeout got a new inning started. Lindsey led off with a single, and Megan brought in the tying run with a triple.  However, Megan was left stranded.  The Aces had to hold the Titans to send the game into ITB.  After a ground out and a strikeout, the next batter hit a single.  The following batter hit one to Amber at 2nd, but it hit the runner before getting to Amber, so the runner was called out, and the ITB inning began. Amber started out on 2nd for the Aces.  After two failed bunt attempts ended in two strikeouts,  the girls rallied back again as Stephanie hit a single to bring home Amber. Lana Jo followed with a double to score Stephanie, and Lindsey followed with a single to score Lana Jo. Megan followed with a single, but two were left stranded.  In the bottom of the ITB inning, the first batter hit a fly ball to Ashley in right field, holding the runner at 2nd. However, the next batter followed with a double that scored the runner.  No problem, though, as the Aces got the next two outs with a pop up to Amber at 2nd and to Lindsey at short.

Bracket 4 - vs Katy Heat.  Aces won 7-0 (forfeit in the 8th inning).
With the Aces visitors once again, Amber led off in the 1st with a single but was left stranded.  Rhiannon pitched for the Aces, and got the Heat 3-up-3-down with two ground outs to Kelsea at 3rd and one back to the pitcher.  The Aces were 3-up-3-down in the 2nd with three pop ups.  The Heat grounded to Kendall at 1st and then to Lindsey at short for the first two outs, and Rhiannon struck out the next batter.  The Aces had two ground outs and a strike out in the 3rd.  In the bottom of the 3rd, after two outs, Rhiannon walked a batter that fouled off 7 pitches. However, the next batter tried to draw the throw to 1st on a dropped 3rd strike when it was only the 2nd strike, to allow the runner on 1st to steal 2nd.  Emily at catcher knew the count and caught the runner stealing 2nd on a throw to Lindsey at short.  However, the umpire ruled that it was the 3rd strike.  If so, then it would have been a force at 2nd anyway.  Both our scorekeeper and the one keeping the board had it as strike 2.  (Later the Heat scorekeeper agreed it was strike 2.  If we would have thrown to 1st and allowed the runner to go to 2nd, I'm sure they would have argued with the umpire to get the stolen base!)  The Aces had 3-up-3-down again in the top of the 4th, with a fly out to right field and two ground outs.  In the bottom of the 4th, the first batter hit a fly ball to Ashley in right.  The next batter reached on a single to right for the Heat's first hit of the game.  However, on the next ball hit to right center field, Ashley ran across and made the catch, and fired to first for the double play!  Rhiannon hit a single on two outs in the 5th but was left stranded.  The Heat also hit a single on two outs in the 5th that was left stranded. Amber reached on a safe bunt in the 6th, but was forced out at 2nd.  One runner was left stranded.  The Heat had 3-up-3-down in the bottom of the 6th, with a line drive to Lindsey at short, a strikeout and a pop up to Amber at 2nd.  With the game tied 0-0, an ITB inning was started.

Kelsea started at 2nd base.  Lana Jo hit a line drive to center that looked like it could clear the fence, but the center fielder made a great jumping catch to rob us of the hit.  Kesha hit a line drive to 3rd that caught Kelsea off 2nd for a double play.  The Heat started with their runner at 2nd, and advanced the runner to 3rd on a sac bunt.  On a hit to 3rd, Kelsea held the runner. Rhiannon intentionally walked the next batter to load the bases with only one out.  The next batter tried for the squeeze play on a bunt, but ran into the ball out of the box and was called out!  A ground out to Lindsey at short left all three stranded and sent the game into a second ITB inning.  At that point, the Heat coach made a substitution re-entry error, and inadvertently removed their only pitcher from the game.  The Heat forfeited the game because they didn't have another pitcher.

Bracket 5 - Championship Game - vs Katy Heat.  Aces lost 2-3.
Amber led off with a single for the Aces (visitors again!) Lindsey and Megan each followed with singles to load the bases. Amber was picked off of 3rd base for the first out.  Two ground outs left two stranded.  The Heat had 3-up-3-down with ground outs to Kelsea at 3rd, Lindsey at short, and Amber at 2nd.  On one out in the 2nd, Lana Jo reached on an overthrow to 1st.  Rhiannon hit a single and beat out the throw to 1st. Kendall bunted and reached 1st on another overthrow to 1st as Lana Jo scored, and Ashley (running for Rhiannon) went to 3rd.  The Heat then overthrew 3rd, and Ashley scored. Amber hit a sac bunt to advance Kendall to 3rd.  A pop up left Kendall stranded.  The Heat hit a single on two outs in the 2nd, but the runner was left stranded. Kesha hit a single in the 3rd but was left stranded.  Rhiannon hit the first batter with a changeup (not much of an attempt to get out of the way!).  The runner advanced on a sac bunt and scored on a double.  One runner was left stranded.  Lana Jo led off the 4th with a single, but was picked off first base for the 3rd out after two pop ups.  The Heat started the 4th with two singles, and the runners advanced on a sac bunt.  Rhiannon struck out the next batter, but a run scored on a passed ball.  One was left stranded.  Lindsey hit a single in the 5th but was forced out at 2nd, and one runner was left stranded.  The Aces held the Heat 3-up-3-down in the 5th, and forced yet another ITB.  Kesha started on 2nd for the Aces, and Emily walked after one out.  However, a line drive to short caught Emily off 1st base for a double play.  The Heat started with a runner on 2nd, and advanced the runner to 3rd on a sac bunt.  The runner scored on a passed ball to give the Heat the winning run and force an 'if game'.

Bracket 6 - If Game - vs Katy Heat.  Aces won 7-0 (forfeit of entire game).
Since the Heat pitcher had just pitched three back-to-back games, the Heat coach chose to forfeit the 'if game' and accept 2nd place.
