Aces in Top 5 at 18U AFA State Tournament
To prepare for upcoming 18U AFA Nationals and 14U ASA Nationals, the Texas Aces participated in the 18U AFA State tournament in Beaumont.  In a field of 41 teams, the Aces were one of the last four teams in the winners bracket.  In the final bracket game on Saturday, the Aces took an early 2-0 lead against the CenTex Babes 18U when two batters reached on errors, and Rhiannon brought both home with a triple.  The Babes came back and scored 3 runs, and the Aces tied it up with another.  The game went into ITB, with the Babes coming out on top in the end.  The Babes team consists of all 18 & 19 year old players, some of which will be college sophomores in the fall.  And half the Aces team will only be high school freshmen next year!  The Aces received compliments from the Babes coaches, players, and parents for playing such a strong game.  The Aces were one of few teams to return on Sunday, but just didn't have any fight in them in their final game against the Katy Express 18U.

Pool Game 1 - vs Texas Panthers 18U.  Aces won 4-1.
In the only pool game, the Aces allowed a runner on an error in the 2nd, and the runner scored on the only hit allowed by Sarah in the two innings she pitched.  Sarah also had two strike outs.  Lana Jo pitched the final two innings, and allowed only one hit with four strike outs. Rhiannon had a single in the 2nd, and Lindsey had a single in the 4th, but the Aces couldn't get the bats going to score any runs.  Finally, in the top of the 5th, the Aces got it going, after Rhiannon was hit by a pitch with one out.  Amber then singled, and Sarah singled to tie the score at 1-1.  Kendall walked to load the bases.  Kelsea came up and was declared the final batter, and she hit a double to the fence to clear the bases!  Good job Kelsea!

Bracket 1 - vs East Texas Sliders 18U.  Aces won 3-0.
Rhiannon pitched an almost perfect game, with no walks and 10 strike outs, allowing only one blooper hit in the bottom of the 5th that Amber at 2nd couldn't quite reach.  The Aces batted first, and Megan singled on two outs in the first but we left stranded.   Amber led off  the 2nd with a single, and advanced on a sac bunt by Kendall.  After a fly out, Kesha reached on an error as Amber scored.  Kelsea led off with a single in the 5th, and advanced on a sac bunt by KeshaLindsey reached on an error as Kelsea scored.  Ashley then singled, and got caught in a run down as Lindsey scored. In the 6th, Rhiannon and Kendall each singled, but were left stranded.

Bracket 2 - vs Montgomery County Elite 18U.  Aces won 4-3.
Sarah started the game for the Aces.  One batter reached on an error in the 1st and one reached on a dropped 3rd strike in the 2nd, but both were left stranded.  In the 3rd, the lead-off batter walked, but after a fielder's choice took the lead runner, the next batter popped up to Sarah, who got the double play on the runner at 1st.  One other batter reached on a walk in the 5th but was also left stranded.  For the Aces, Kelsea singled in the 2nd but was left stranded.  Kelsea was the next base runner when she singled in the bottom of the 5th.  After Sarah reached on an error, Kelsea was forced out at 3rd.  Ashley singled to score the first run of the game.  Lindsey singled to bring home another run, and Ashley was thrown out at the plate trying to score.  Lana Jo came in the finish the game in the 6th.  After two quick ground outs, the Elite hit back to back singles.  The Aces just needed an out to win the game.  However, the Elite doubled to score two runs and tie up the game!  Rhiannon came in and got the final strike out to end the inning.  The Aces failed to do anything in the bottom of the 6th in regulation, forcing the game into ITB.  The Elite runner on 2nd advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, but Rhiannon got two outs with a ground out to first and a pop up to 2nd.  Rhiannon walked the next batter, and the Elite singled to take the lead.  A final strike out left two stranded.  Kesha started at 2nd for the Aces, running for Rhiannon.  A ground out advanced Kesha to 3rd, but the next batter popped up for the 2nd out.  Stephanie was up and battled at the plate.  With two outs, and a full count, with the Aces down by one run, Stephanie was the hero as she singled to bring home a run and keep the Aces alive in the game!  Lana Jo singled, and Ashley reached on an error to load the bases, but a pop up left the bases loaded and forced a second ITB inning.  The Aces took care of the runner this time as Megan caught the runner stealing 3rd.  The Aces got two more quick outs and were up to bat again.  Lindsey started at 2nd.  Kendall drew a walk, and Megan bunted the runners over.  The Elite intentionally walked Rhiannon to load the bases.  While Amber was up to bat, the pitcher threw a wild pitch and Lindsey scored to win the game!

Bracket 3 - vs Missouri City Magic Nine 18U.  Aces won 12-4.
Rhiannon tripled in the 1st, but was left stranded.  In the bottom of the inning, Lana Jo walked two batters on two outs, then got the force out at 3rd.  Amber led off the 2nd with a single, and advanced on a passed ball.  Kelsea followed with a single to advance Amber to 3rd.  Amber scored on a passed ball, and Kelsea advanced to 3rd.  Lana Jo bunted to score KelseaAshley bunted to advance Lana Jo to 3rd.  Kesha hit into a fielder's choice that held Lana Jo.  After a fly out, Kendall triped to score two runs.  Rhiannon reached on error as Kendall scored.  The Aces put 5 runs up that inning.  On two outs, Magic 9 doubled, and two singles each drove home a run before the side was retired.  Magic 9 started another pitcher in the 3rd.  Kelsea singled, but was left stranded.  Kesha led off the 4th with a single, and Lindsey followed with another.  Kendall hit into a fielder's choice which got Kesha at 3rd.  Rhiannon reached on error again as one run scored.  After another out, Amber singled to score another run, and the third potential run was out at the plate.  Lana Jo allowed only one hit in the 4th.  The bats were hot again in the 5th, as Kelsea led off with a double.  Lana Jo followed with another double to drive in another run.  After a pop up, and a ground out, Lindsey singled and advanced to 2nd as Lana Jo scored. Kendall singled and advanced to 2nd as Lindsey scored.  Rhiannon followed with her 2nd triple of the game to drive home KendallMegan doubled to score Rhiannon, and Magic 9 switched back the their starting pitcher for the final out.   On two outs in the 5th, Magic 9 doubled and scored two runs on two singles and an error before the Aces shut them down.

Bracket 4 - vs CenTex Babes 18U.  Aces lost 3-5 in ITB.
The Aces returned still in the winners bracket on Sunday morning, to face the much older Babes team.  Their girls were actually teasing some of our girls for being so young.  However, things got serious as they realized the Aces were there to play ball.  In the first, Rhiannon struck out the first two batters before walking one, but the next batter grounded out back to the pitcher.  On two outs, Rhiannon hit a hard shot to 2nd and reached on the error, but was left stranded.  The Babes led off with a single in the 2nd, and the lead runner was forced out at 2nd.  Rhiannon struck out another, and a batter reached on error, but two were left stranded.  In the bottom of the 2nd, the Aces were 3-up-3-down.  The Babes were also 3-up-3-down in the top of the 3rd as Rhiannon struck out two and one popped up to Megan behind the plate.  In the bottom of the 3rd, the Aces were hitting the ball hard and causing the Babes to make errors, as Stephanie and Lindsey both reached base.  Kendall bunted the runners into scoring position for the 2nd out, and Rhiannon tripled to score two runs and put the Aces in the lead.  Rhiannon was left stranded at 3rd.  In the 4th, the Babes led off with a double, and singled to advance the runner to 3rd.  The next batter doubled to tie up the score.  After a sac bunt and a pop up, Rhiannon walked one.  The next batter singled to put the Babes up by one before the side was retired.  Megan singled in the bottom of the 4th, and advanced on a sac bunt by KeshaSarah reached on error as Megan scored to tie the game again.  The Babes led off with a single in the 5th, but the runner was forced out and one was left stranded.  With time running out, the Aces had a chance to put the game away in regulation, as Kendall walked on one out, and Rhiannon followed with a single.  However, a fly out and a strike out forced the game into ITB.  Unfortunately, the experience really showed here as the Babes took the first pitch in ITB to the fence for two runs.  Rhiannon struck out the next, and got two ground outs, but the damage was done.  The Aces couldn't come up with anything in the bottom of the inning, but did earn a lot of respect from the players and coaches of the Babes for playing such a good game against the older girls!

Bracket 5 - vs Katy Express 18U.  Aces lost 0-1.
In the top of the 1st, Kendall reached on an error but was left stranded.  In the bottom of the 1st, Sarah struck out the first batter, and the next batter singled.  The batter quickley stole 2nd and 3rd.  On a grounder to 3rd, Megan checked the runner and threw to first for the out, but the runner broke for home and scored.  Amber singled to start off the 2nd, but was out on a fielder's choice as one runner was left stranded.  There were no runners in the bottom of the 2nd or top of the 3rd.  On two outs (one because the Express were only playing with 8 players), the Express hit back-to-back singles, but both were left stranded as Lana Jo came in for the final out.  The Express led off with a single in the 4th, and the Aces got the lead runner on a fielder's choice and one runner was left stranded.  Lana Jo doubled in the 5th but was left stranded.   Kendall and Kelsea both singled in the 6th, but were left stranded, as the game ended at 1-0.

In the Express game before ours, the Aces watched a really crafty baserunning play by the Express.  With a runner on 3rd, and two outs, the 8th batter in the line-up was batting.  Because the 9th spot was an automatic out, the opposing team decided to intentionally walk the batter to get the automatic 3rd out.  However, when ball 4 rolled in to the catcher, the batter slowly headed to 1st base, as the runner from 3rd stole home before the catcher could react.  The run scored, and the 3rd out was called as soon as the runner reached 1st.  It was the only run of the game.  Just glad they didn't pull that one on us!
