Aces Qualify for Gold Nationals!
Qualified for 2007 Gold Nationals!!!!!!
What a weekend!  The Aces took the long road through the bracket in the Gold Qualifier after losing their first game on Friday night.  After the loss, someone told Coach Kim that no team had ever made it all the way through the loser's bracket to qualify.  Good thing the Aces girls didn't hear that!

Game 1: Texas Aces Gold 0 - Hit Away Gold 1.  The Aces had runners in scoring position in every inning of the first game, but couldn’t come up with a timely hit to get a run across the plate.  Hit Away’s lone run came in the 5th as the Aces had two errors in the inning that allowed the run to score.  Rhiannon allowed only two hits and one walk with 6 strike outs in the loss, and the Aces had 4 hits with singles by Rhiannon, Jenna, and Kelsea, and a double by Kalyn.

Game 2: Texas Aces Gold 8 - Tucson Bandits 0.  The Aces came back Saturday morning and found their bats against the Bandits as they pounded out 9 hits to combine with 5 Bandit errors for 8 runs.  The Aces started their scoring rally in the first with 4 runs.  After Kesha got to 3rd on a single, a stolen base, and a passed ball, Lindsey drove her in with a single, and Jenna singled as Lindsey advanced to 3rd.  On an attempt to catch Lindsey at third, the throw landed in the Aces dugout, allowing Lindsey to score and awarding Jenna 3rd.  Kalyn reached on an error as Jenna scored.  Kelsea ran for Kalyn and stole 2nd and advanced on a ground out, then scored on a sac fly by Holly.  Katie also singled in the inning and stole 2nd & 3rd.  Holly drove in another run with a single in the 3rd, and also tripled and scored on a throwing error in the 5th.  Beth drove in two runs with a double in the 6th.  Beth pitched the complete game and was one hit away from a perfect game.  The runner never made it to 2nd, as Katie caught her stealing!

Texas Aces Gold 2 - Sudden Impact Gold 1.
The next game against Sudden Impact Gold looked like it got off to a good start, as the Aces started with consecutive singles in the 1st inning.  However, both runners were left stranded.  An Aces error and a walk gave SI two base runners in the 2nd, but Rhiannon struck out the final two batters and left them stranded.  SI’s Sadie Pitzenberger started off the 3rd with a bunt single, and helped herself to 2nd before the Aces knew what happened.  After taking 3rd on a sac bunt, Sadie drew the Aces into a rundown and ended up sliding across home plate and scoring.  That woke the Aces defense up!  SI only had two more base runners reach first on singles in regulation play.  The Aces had a runner in scoring position in the 5th, but got out on a double play.  In the bottom of the 6th, Kelsea reached on a bunt single with one out.  She advanced to 2nd on a single to left by Jenna.  Rhiannon drove home Kelsea with a single to right to tie the game.  With time expired, the game went into ITB.  Rhiannon struck out one, then a base hit put runners at 1st & 2nd.  Runners moved into scoring position on a sac bunt, but Holly caught a line drive in center to end the threat.  In the bottom of the inning, with Holly on 2nd, Lauren dropped a bunt that SI couldn’t field, and was safe at 1st as Holly moved to 3rd.  SI intentionally walked Katie to load the bases with no outs.  On a hit and run, Kesha hit to 3rd as Holly raced home, and the 3rd baseman made a bad throw to allow Holly to score and win the game!  Sarah Odom (Oklahoma State) took the loss for Sudden Impact.

Texas Aces Gold 2 - Schutt Avengers Gold 0.  Kesha led off with a single, but ended up stranded at 3rd.   The Avengers reached on a one-out single, but the runner was doubled off on a foul fly caught by Kalyn.  With two outs in the 2nd, Holly singled to center.  Preston hit a double to the fence that allowed Holly to score from 1st.  Miller followed with another single to score Preston.  A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, but all were stranded.  But that was all the runs the Aces would need, as Rhiannon allowed only one more hit, and Beth finished the final two innings, striking out 3 and allowing only one base runner on a single.  Kalyn, Kesha, Jamie, and Rhiannon also hit singles in the game.

Texas Aces Gold 1 - High Voltage Cobras Gold 0.
In the fourth game of the day, the Aces had a runner in scoring position in almost every inning, but had trouble getting a run across the plate.  Lindsey walked in the first and moved to 2nd on a ground out.  Holly singled and stole 2nd in the 2nd.  Kesha and Lindsey reached on back to back walks in the 3rd.  Rhiannon singled in the 4th.  Kalyn singled with no outs in the 5th, advanced on a sac bunt and a ground out, but was left stranded at 3rd.  Finally in the 7th, Rhiannon led off with a double down the 3rd base line.  Miller ran for her, and moved to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt by Holly.  Kalyn reached on an error as the ball went under the 2nd baseman’s glove, and Miller scored as Kalyn moved to 2nd.  Kesha singled, and Kalyn tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate.  But one run was enough, as the Cobras went down in order in the bottom of the inning.  Their only scoring threat came in the 4th with a lead off single followed by an error put two runners on with no outs, but Rhiannon struck out the next batter, and Kalyn caught a pop-up, and a ground out left both stranded.  The Cobras also led off the 6th with a single, but Jenna made a diving catch of a foul fly by the 3rd base dugout, and the runner headed for 2nd thinking it was just a foul ball, and didn’t get back to first before Jenna fired to Kalyn for a double play.

Texas Aces Gold 4 - Texas Impact Gold 0.  After a short night, the Aces headed back Sunday morning to ready to play some more games.  Kesha led off the game with a single for the 5th time of the weekend, and advanced on a sac bunt by Lindsey.  On two outs, Rhiannon hit a grounder back to the pitcher, but a bad throw to 1st allowed Kesha to score.  The Aces had runners in scoring position the next 3 innings, but failed to score.  Kalyn singled in the 2nd and advanced on a groundout.  Kesha walked and advanced on a sac bunt in the 3rd.  Holly singled and stole 2nd in the 4th.  In the 5th, Kelsea led off with a single and advanced on a sac bunt by Kesha, and moved to 3rd on a ground out.  Preston walked with two outs, and moved to 2nd uncontested.  Rhiannon followed with a line drive double down the 1st base line to send Kelsea and Preston across the plate.  Watts came in to pitch for Impact Gold.  Miller stole 3rd, then scored on a wild pitch.  The Aces loaded the bases in the 6th as Kalyn reached on an error, Kelsea walked, and Katie singled to center, but all were left stranded.  Impact Gold had only one base runner in the 4th that reached on an error, as Rhiannon pitched a no-hitter with 6 strike outs.  Brittany Barnhill (Texas) took the loss for Impact Gold.

Texas Aces Gold 1 - Texas Storm DeMarini Gold 0.  In the 1st inning against the Storm, Lindsey was hit by a pitch for the 4th time of the weekend.  Preston singled and Lindsey moved to 2nd.  Rhiannon followed with another single, and Lindsey scored.  Kalyn singled to start the 2nd, but was doubled off on a line drive to first.  Jenna singled in the 4th, and the bases were loaded after Kalyn and Katie walked, but all were left stranded on fly balls to the outfield.  Lindsey walked in the 5th and advanced on a sac bunt, but was left stranded.  The one run held up, as Rhiannon allowed only three hits and walked none, and the defense was flawless.  Jenna fielded three ground balls and a sac bunt at 3rd, Holly caught three fly balls in center field,   Lindsey fielded two grounders and a pop-up at 2nd, and Preston caught a pop-up at short.  Rhiannon also covered her position, fielding a line drive and a pop-up to go along with 4 K’s.  The biggest out came in the 6th, after Storm hit a bunt single, and advanced to 3rd on a sac bunt and a ground out.  The final batter hit a fly ball to right, and Kesha snagged it for the out to end the game.

After coming this far, the Aces really wanted to win it.  We were too close to miss the chance now!  The Hawks had only played two games on Saturday while we battled through four. The Hawks lost to Glory Gold in their first game on Sunday, while we eliminated Impact Gold and Storm DeMarini.

Texas Aces Gold 3 - Texas Hawks Gold 1.  Lindsey drew a full count walk in the first, followed by a single by Preston.  Rhiannon singled to left and Lindsey scored the first run of the game.  The Aces loaded the bases in the bottom of the 2nd with singles by Kalyn, Jamie, and Kesha, with one strike out in between.  Then a sharp line drive to the pitcher caught Kalyn off 3rd for a double play.  The Hawks hit a two-out single in the 3rd, and an error on a single to center allowed a run to score and tie the game.  Kesha made a great catch in left to leave one runner stranded.  Preston and Rhiannon hit consecutive singles in the 3rd, and advanced on a sac bunt.  On another line drive to the pitcher, Preston got back to 3rd in time.  Kalyn then hit a double to the fence to drive in two runs.  A walk to Jamie and a single by Kelsea loaded the bases, but a line drive to 3rd left 3 stranded.  Lindsey led off the 4th with a single, and Rhiannon singled after an out.  A fielder's choice got the out at 2nd, and two were left stranded on a line drive to center.  The Aces were still batting in the bottom of the 5th when time expired, giving the Aces the victory and the berth to ASA Gold Nationals!

Rhiannon batted 0.435 with 5 RBI for the weekend, and was 6-1 in the circle.  Beth batted 0.500 and was 1-0 with 1 save.  Kalyn, Kesha, Katie, and Holly also batted over 0.300.  Lindsey, Jamie, Megan, Miller, and a few others played perfect defense.  Megan saw some action in right field and at 2nd base, but her main role for the weekend was as a pinch runner throughout all the games, as she ran for various players when extra speed was needed on base.  Everyone on the team had a role to play, and it took a true team effort to succeed.

Congratulations Texas Aces Gold on a job well done!
