Game 1: Texas Aces Gold 4 - Third Coast Thunder 0.
Beth struck out 7 and allowed only 1 hit with 1 walk over 6
innings. The Aces left runners stranded in the 2nd and 3rd
innings, then scored four runs in the 4th as Beth led off with a double
and advanced on an infield single by Kesha. Kelsea singled to
score Holly, running for Beth, and Kesha scored on a passed ball.
Preston walked, and Rhiannon singled to drive in two more runs.
Kesha was 2-3, Rhiannon was 2-2, and Jamie and Katie also had singles.
Game 2: Texas Aces Gold 2 - Wichita Mustangs 1.
The Aces were visitors, and quickly put two runs on the board in the
first inning. Lindsey hit a single up the middle, Rhiannon
singled to left center, and Kalyn drew a walk. Kelsea hit a
double to deep left center and drove in the 2 runs. In the bottom
of the inning, the 2nd batter (one of the Baylor Wesley twins) singled,
and scored on another single. Baylor's Courtney Oberg also
singled, but Rhiannon struck out the next batter and induced a ground
out to leave two runners stranded. The Mustangs never got another
hit, although they had two baserunners in the 4th with a walk and an
error, but Rhiannon struck out one in between, and struck out the final
two batters of the inning to leave both stranded. The Aces had 9
hits: Kalyn was 2-2, Miller was 2-2, Kelsea was 2-3, and Kesha, Lindsey, and Rhiannon also had singles.
Game 3: Texas Aces Gold 5 - Las Vegas Blast 0. Beth
pitched a 5-inning no-hitter with 5 strike outs. The Blast had
one baserunner on a walk. The Aces scored in the first inning,
after Preston hit a two-out single, and Rhiannon followed with an RBI
double. After 2 outs in the 4th, Kalyn reached on an error.
Kesha ran for Kalyn and stole 2nd. Kelsea beat out an infield
single. Kesha scored on an error, and Jamie was hit by a
pitch. Holly singled up the middle for an RBI, and Jamie scored
on a wild pitch. Miller followed with another single for another
RBI.
Game 4: Texas Aces Gold 6 - Texas Peppers 0. Rhiannon
allowed 1 hit with 3 strike outs over 4 innings. The Peppers had
a base runner in the 2nd on an Aces error, and Rhiannon singled in the
bottom of the 2nd, but neither side could score. In the
3rd, Miller singled, and Katie walked. Beth singled to drive in
the Aces first run. Megan reached on a fielder's choice, and
stole 2nd while allowing another runner to cross the plate.
Lindsey drew a walk to lead off the 4th. After two outs, Kalyn
also walked. Kelsea singled and drove in a run, then Jamie
singled and drove in another. Holly hit a double to the fence and
drove in two more.
Game 5: Texas Aces Gold 6 - Oklahoma Lightning 0. Beth
allowed two hits with 8 strike outs and two walks in 5 innings of
work. Rhiannon, Holly, and Kelsea hit back to back singles to
load the bases with no outs in the 2nd, but all three were left
stranded. In the bottom of the 3rd, with two outs, Megan drew a
full count walk. Kesha hit a triple and Megan scored.
Lindsey singled to score Kesha, and Preston singled and Lindsey moved
to 3rd. Rhiannon drove both in with a double. Holly
followed with a triple for the Aces 5th run of the inning. Kalyn
led off the bottom of the 4th with a single. Kelsea ran for her
and stole 2nd & 3rd before scoring on a error.
Game 6: Texas Aces Gold 0 - Austin Storm 4.
The Aces headed into the final pool game a little worn out, and didn't
play to their potential. The Aces left two stranded in the 1st that
reached on a walk and an error. The Storm scored a run on three
hits in the 2nd. Kelsea led off with a triple in the 2nd, but got
caught off base in a double play. Kalyn and Katie also had hits in the game.
The Aces had an uncharacteristic number of errors in the 3rd that
allowed the Storm to score 2 more runs, and the Storm scored another in
the 6th on 3 hits.
In spite of losing their final game, the Aces still finished first in
their pool and advance to the single elimination bracket that starts on
Sunday.
Game 7: Texas Aces Gold 6 - Black Ice 0.
Beth pitched 6 innings, allowing only two hits, with no walks and 1
strike out. Both hits came in the 4th inning, which put runners at
first and 2nd with one out. On a hard hit grounder to 3rd base, Jamie
quickly fielded the ball and stepped on third base, and made a perfect
throw to first base for the double play. Those were the only base
runners for Black Ice. The Aces scored in the 1st after Kesha singled
up the middle to start the inning, Lindsey reached on an error, and
Preston singled to load the bases. Rhiannon reached on a fielder's
choice to short, which failed to get an out at 2nd as Kesha scored, but
3 were left stranded. Rhiannon and Holly hit back-to-back singles to
start the 4th, and Kelsea walked to load the bases with no outs. Kalyn
singled for the first RBI of the inning, and Miller singled to right
for two more RBI's. Katie grounded out, but got an RBI in the
process. The Aces added another run in the 5th after Preston singled
with two outs, and Rhiannon drove her home with a triple.
Due to several 1st place pool winners leaving early to
head to Beaumont for AFA Nationals, the tournament director allowed
several 2nd place teams in to fill the bracket, so we faced the
Mustangs from our pool again.
Game 8: Texas Aces 3 - Wichita Mustangs 1. Apparently
the Mustangs sent their returning college players home for bracket, and
let the younger girls play. It was a very different team than we
played the first time. The first batter led off with a single, but
Rhiannon got the next three to ground out, leaving the runner stranded
at 3rd. Kesha led off with a single, and Preston walked. A wild pitch
put both in scoring position. Rhiannon singled to drive in Kesha for
the first run. The Mustangs scored in the 2nd on two singles. Holly
led off the 4th with a double, and advanced on a single by Kelsea.
Holly scored on a bad throw to first, while Kelsea was able to move to
2nd. Kalyn drove in Kelsea with a double. The Mustangs threatened in
the 6th with a lead-off single, but Rhiannon caught the runner in a
double play after a line drive back to the pitcher. Preston also had a
hit in the game.
Game 9: Texas Aces 0 - Bat Busters 3. The Aces had trouble
stringing together hits and somehow avoided scoring in this game.
Lindsey singled in the 1st and was out on a fielder's choice. Holly
led off the 2nd with a double, but got tagged out at 3rd trying to
stretch it into a triple. Katie and Beth hit back to back singles in
the 3rd on two outs, but were left stranded. The Bat Busters scored
one in the 2nd, one in the 3rd, and one in the 4th. The Aces showed
hopes of a comeback as Holly led off the 5th with another double and
Kelsea followed with a single, but both were left stranded. The
winner went on to the Championship game against the Texas Glory Gold.
It was tough to lose, but it was time to head back home anyway. The
Aces got 9 games in over 2 1/2 days, and were watched by quite a few
college coaches, so it was a successful weekend of softball!
