Girls athlete of the week

• Name: Katie Brokmeyer, senior, Katy.
• Notable: With the Tigers down two runs, the designated hitter belted a two-out two-run homer at Morton Ranch in the bottom of the seventh in Game 3 of the Class 5A Region III finals. The Tigers scored in the eighth to get the series win and secure the school's first trip to the state tournament.
• Quotable: "There was discussion earlier this year to take Katie out of the lineup, but she is a senior and a leader so I wasn't about to take someone out who I knew was capable of big plays. That was a good decision."

OTHER NOMINEES

• Meghan Brown, Cinco Ranch — The junior catcher had three consecutive home runs in the Region III-5A finals against Katy.
• Ashley Curry, Brenham — Curry had one of only two hits in Brenham's 2-0 win over Texas City in the Region III-4A finals.
• Matte Haack, Katy — The sophomore made several key defensive plays for the Tigers in a 5-4 win over Cinco Ranch in Game 3 of the Region III-5A finals.
• Carlee Winkelmann, Brenham — She allowed one hit and three runners in the Cubettes' 2-0 win over Texas City in the Class 4A Region III finals.
