The top performers in high school sports in the Houston area:
Girls athlete of the week Name: Meghan Slattery, sophomore, Memorial. Notable: Slattery had two triples and four RBIs in a 9-8 win over Nimitz on Tuesday to help keep the Mustangs perfect (7-0) in District 19-5A. She also had a double in Friday's 6-1 win over Stratford. Quotable: "I felt like when I was at bat we needed some big hits," Slattery said, "so I just found my pitch and went for it. We just want to keep playing well, getting the hits we need, and hopefully win district."
Other nomineesErica Alexander, Clear Brook — The junior won the 200- and 400-meter dash on Saturday at the TSU Relays. Alexander, the defending Class 5A state champion in the 400, posted the best time (54.12 seconds) in the state at that distance so far this season.Kendell Kramer, Langham Creek — The junior forward had the Lobos' two goals in a 2-1 win over Cypress Creek on Friday. Langham Creek finished the district season 8-3 and has the third-place playoff spot. Kelsea Orsak, Pearland — The junior catcher had a .583 batting average for the week, going 7-for-12 in three Oilers wins. She had seven RBIs, five runs and two stolen bases. Allison Pye, Cypress Creek — The senior won two distance events at the Klein Relays on Saturday. Pye won the 1,600 with a time of 4:59.75, best in the area this season and fourth in the state. She also won the 3,200, posting the top time in the state at 10:45.68. |
