Pearland slams B'wood
Published March 31, 2007 CLUTE — Sitting in a three-way tie in District 24-5A, the Brazoswood Lady Bucs and Pearland Lady Oilers were looking for an advantage Friday night. With Brazoswood already having defeated Pearland (3-2) in the first go-round of district play, it was up to the Lady Oilers to settle the score. And that they did, behind a freshman hitter and a no-hitter from Rhiannon Kliesing, who carried Pearland to a convincing 8-1 downing of the Lady Bucs at Lady Buc Field. “Our kids came out to play, and it was obvious that the first inning was the difference in the game,” Pearland coach Laneigh Clark said. “People getting on and Jay coming up with a big grand slam. It’s one of the best games that my team has been a part of this year.” Pearland, which ran its record to 23-5, Kliesing’s slow chopper to second base loaded the bases. Starter Katie McGregor struck out the next Lady Oiler for two outs. But then freshman McGregor got out of the frame with no more damage, but Pearland was ahead 4-0. In the third, the Lady Oilers struck again, but this time were helped by two Lady Buc errors. Both were by left fielder Clarissa Alvarez. With one out, Kliesing singled to right field to put runners on first and second. Alvarez’s second error loaded the bases as Tiffany Stritz reached first base. Pearland continued to score two more runs in that same frame, as a single by Kliesing, who ran her record to “The kid is just money, she is great on the mound at the plate and very non-emotional when she is out there,” Clark said. “She takes it upon herself to do the job and she does it.” The only run Brazoswood pushed across came in the fourth as Brittanie Garay led off with a walk to start the frame. An error on the shortstop put runners on the corners for the Lady Bucs as Kristen Kappler’s groundout to third base scored Garay on the play. “I was telling them that they’ve got if not the best pitcher in the state one of the best in the state,” Brazoswood coach Laura Oltman said. “We’d beaten them six times in a row with her pitching and that is hard to do and the odds caught up to us.” Brazoswood, now 21-3-2, 5-2, will travel for a 7 p.m. game at Clear Creek on Tuesday. The Lady Oilers will be off until Thursday when they host Clear Creek at 7 p.m. |
