A review of the top performances in high school athletics in the Houston area:

Girls athlete of the week

Name: Rhiannon Kliesing, Pearland.

Notable: The senior pitcher was 2-0 last week, leading the team to a district championship and a No. 1 seed in District 24-5A. She had 28 strikeouts in 14 innings, allowing one walk and two earned runs against Clear Brook on Friday and Alvin on Saturday.

Quotable: "She gets the job done. She knows her role and knows what we need to stay on top," Pearland coach Laneigh Clark said.

Other nominees

Katie Murphy, Lamar — Less than a week after being hospitalized for five days recuperating from the bite of a brown recluse spider, Murphy on Friday hit a two-run double that was the difference in a 4-3 win over Bellaire, which sealed the District 20-5A title for the Redskins.

Sarah Perales, MacArthur — She struck out 11 Nimitz batters en route to a 5-2 win over the Cougars. Perales also had a double in the victory, which solidified MacArthur's spot at No. 2 in District 19-5A.

Sophie Peters, Awty — The junior won the 400 meters (58.75) and 800 (2:18.71) and ran a 59.8-second lead leg on the winning 1,600 relay team at the TAPPS 4-5A district championships. She is the defending state TAPPS champion in both the 400 and 800.

Shannon Smith, Cinco Ranch — In a 5-2 win over Mayde Creek on Friday, Smith (14-2, 8-0 in District 18-5A) struck out 14. She also had an RBI double to help the Cougars earn sole possession of the No. 1 spot in 18-5A.
